Redesigning a UI for iOS 7 (case study)

We're going to discuss the new look of iOS 7, and how an existing app might be changed to fit with iOS 7's newly keynoted look.  Blue (one of our co-organizers) has been working on making one of his existing apps (Trigger) match the new iOS 7 style, and he's going to talk to us about his process and his before and after.

Given our history with design discussions, this may get lively :-).

More info about where we're meeting is here http://cocoacoder.org/meet/atomic-axis-directions/

(Our tentative localization topic needed to be postponed, as one of the principal's is going to be out of town).

Great practical discussion of design issues in moving an app to iOS 7.

Has anyone used any of the commercial localization packages?

    • Darren S.

We've used icanlocalize.com. They were fairly easy to work with and reasonably priced.

So in the future when an existing iOS 6 app is re-released requiring iOS 7, someone with an iOS 6 device that has the original iOS version of the app will not see the the iOS 7 upgrade? True?

    June 26, 2013

    • Darren S.

Unfortunately not. The app will get updated and the user won't be able to use it and there is no way for the user to revert back to the version that used to work.

Blue, are you going full iOS 7 or will the new Trigger be iOS 6-but-look-like-iOS7?

So you're all in iOS 7 + Xcode5? Are you Mavericks?

      June 26, 2013

    • Blue

I have a little bit of work left to do on an iOS 6 app for a client, but after that, I can make a clean break. I haven't played with Mavericks yet, but I have a Mac app that needs updating, and that'll be Mavericks-only. Of course, my situation is somewhat special: I have such a small user base that if I tick off everyone by abandoning legacy platforms, then I annoy all of a couple dozen people on the planet. ;) But seriously ... My current apps are "stable" on iOS 6 and Mountain Lion ---no bug fixes or feature enhancements pending--- so that I can leave them be.

Looking forward to Blue's presentation! Fascinated with the "hard push" to Storyboard and Auto Layout in a fair number of docs and videos. Is "Hard Push" to use Storyboard and Auto Layout for iOS 7 accurate or am I reading too much into what I watch and read? Carpe diem.

I definitely got the same impression. Autolayout I get as there are a number of new features in iOS7 that really start to require dynamic layouts. I've always had a problem getting behind storyboards though maybe it's time for another look.
