Content Strategy Lightning Talks

Details

On Monday 14 October our popular lightning talks event returns, where each speaker gets 5 minutes and 20 slides (15 seconds per slide) to share their unique perspectives on content strategy in a blur of energy, passion and intensity. The buzz is incredible—you should try it! (Our lightning talks events always sell out, so make you get your ticket early.)

Meet the speakers

Check out our 8 speakers and their fantastic talks!

Martin Belam (http://twitter.com/martin_belam): Dinosaurs, Diamonds and Darwin

Our universe and the natural world have had billions of years to evolve, and scientists have been observing, studying and classifying natural history for hundreds if not thousands of years.

So how do you represent this myriad of information to the users in the context of a massive tourist attractions and thriving academic institution? In this lightning talk, Martin Belam will outline how Emblem Digital approached a project to help evolve the information architecture of London’s famous Natural History Museum on the web.

Hannah Bullock (http://twitter.com/tinybullock): How Agile made me fitter

Agile software development is like Marmite; you either love it or hate it. But couldn’t we learn to use the best bits it has to offer, to improve the way we design and build digital platforms? I’ll share 5 things I learnt from an Agile website build I’ll never forget…

David Hawdale (http://twitter.com/davidhawdale): Easy to Choose? Content meets Behavioural Design

Content is never neutral, it explicitly or implicitly suggests ideas and behaviours to its readers. With Behavioural Design using the power of content we can nudge users towards preferred behaviours. Applied strategically it can help local government encourage the best use of resources, whilst offering all options.

James Offer (http://twitter.com/joffley): Practical content gamification

Can gamification really help your content work and play? Turning your content into a game isn’t quite the answer. Instead we need to open up the gaming toolbox and see how we can use some gaming techniques to create content that is more engaging and insightful.

Lucie Pitcher (http://twitter.com/luciepitcher): Content strategy on a shoestring

Lucie will talk about her recent experiences working with a small budget at the BBC.

Paul Rissen (http://twitter.com/r4isstatic): Comedy, Alchemy and Drama on the Web

We conflate the Internet & the Web, the screen and the experience, and thereby lose out on a great deal of creative potential. Where is the art, the drama and comedy, of the Web? What happens when we treat the Web itself as a medium of creative expression, and start designing beautiful, elegant webs?

Emily Turner (http://twitter.com/emilyaturner): What happened when John Lewis forgot its virtual snowman?

John Lewis spent £10m for a Christmas ad campaign and forgot to create a 360-degree social media experience. Step into the room @mrsjlsnowman who I created two days after the ad launch to celebrate Christmas, cake, decorations, Elf, John Lewis, carols and presents. The journey included a viral following, Twitter rivalry among parody accounts, Twitter jail, Twitter bans, talking to John Lewis marketing dept on the phone in character, snow ball fights with JL’s marketing director, a marriage with anonymous Mr Snowman and coverage in the Standard and the Drum.

Rick Yagodich (http://twitter.com/think_info): Principles of Author Experience

We devise content strategies to provide process and governance in how we wish to communicate with our customers; policies to ensure the content is optimised for user experience. But someone forgot… authors are users, too. What about their experience?
