Side Project Jam Session

Details

You have a job to do. But then there's also that other thing. That thing you can't help but think about when you're not supposed to. You doodle it into the margins of your notepad when you're supposed to be paying attention in a meeting. You read about it on your lunch break. You stay up late, working when everyone else is sleeping.

It's your side project. Maybe one day it will be your main squeeze. If only you could squeeze out some time to focus just on that, amidst the endless daily distractions...

Enter the after-hours side project jam session. A gathering of people who, like you, are building something awesome on the side. By gathering, we create an opportunity for us to support each other and make progress in ways we'd struggle to achieve on our own. We'll talk about what we're working on and in particular what's holding us back. We'll find ways to help each other. And, most importantly, we'll sit down, turn up the music, and get to work.

Set goals, get help, get to work. At this jam session, you'll not only talk about what you're going to do, you're going to sit down and do it. Here's how it works:

• Introductions - Everyone will have a chance to say what they're trying to accomplish, what they'll be working on that night, and one thing that they're trying to figure out.

• Work Sprint - After we're all acquainted, we'll set a timer (inspired by the Pomodoro Technique) and do a 25 minute session of focused work. No chit chat, no email, no social media (for goodness sakes, especially no (http://i.imgur.com/rQOIjRV.gif) social media!), just jamming on what you want to get done.

• Break - We'll then take a ten minute break. We can discuss how it went, ideas, questions, issues, whatever. We can check email or go to the bathroom (or both). Then...

• Repeat. We'll alternate sprints and breaks. We'll marvel at how much we can get done when we seriously sit down and focus together.

=== Bring three things ===

• Bring work to do. Make sure you have a specific idea of what you'll be working on, so when the sprinting starts you know which way you'll be headed!

• Bring your own laptop or whatever device you need to do your work.

• Bring a friendly disposition. It's kind of like employees having to wash hands in the restroom. Shouldn't everyone?
