Drupal NoVA Meetup - Drupal/Moodle Single Sign On and Moodle Overview

  • Jun 17, 2014 · 7:00 PM

Our regular meetup is the third Tuesday of every month - currently rotating between ICF and Bixal in Fairfax.

Join us for our monthly Drupal NoVA meetup!

We'll start with some socializing, do a round of intros and presentations, more socializing!

We'll have Tommy Peterson give us an overview of how to do Single Sign On with Drupal and Moodle and go over the key features of Moodle, an open source LMS that is often integrated with Drupal.

We hope to see you there!

Tommy Peterson:

Worked in IT in various roles since the late 1990s. He is a PHP expert, having built systems from scratch as well as converted a few JAVA applications to PHP.  Over the last 3 years, he has consulted with various companies on their Moodle implementations and enhancements from installation to creating single sign-ons to web services.

I was reading a discussion board thread of Moodle admins/Ops in which i t was explained how most normal hosting is set up in a way that is not optimized for best performance of a system like Moodle. This introduced the concept of "tuning" (a host/server) to me , particularly the back-end database. Most normal CMS-powered websites make few writes to the back-end database and instead most activity flows the other way, consisting of reads. However, an actively-used Moodle system will make many writes to the database during a vistor's usage.
In other words, the ratio between writes and reads from the mySQL database is more symmetrical than (in contrast) with most CMSs.

If I learn more about MySQL admin/config/op, then maybe I can do some tuning to improve this. However, certain administrative controls over the server are out of my reach since the hosting I currently work with is shared.
A VPS or dedicated server would allow more control over the innards of the host's OS or platform. I look forward to learning about all of these things.

If you can also invite people to submit talks to php[world], we'd love to get more DC Drupalers speaking. http://world.phparch.com/
