Intermediate Hike at Callahan State Park
Details
Callahan is a pleasant small park located in northern Framingham MA. It has a variety of terrain; but it's mostly wooded. There is a half-mile long earthen dam to protect against flooding; it makes for a very level trail. There are several hills, and one will get your heart pumping.
I suggest trails that take us around the edge of the southern half of the park. It's about 4 miles, about 2-3 hours. There are many crisscrossing trails to make the hike shorter; and there's the northern half of the park to make the hike longer.
We will meet in the Edmunds Road parking lot. It's a large lot that will hold many cars. Google says the coordinates are 42°19'53.0"N 71°28'31.7"W. The area is lots of small roads; so use a GPS device, or map your route ahead of time.
New hikers and those not sure of their abilities should bring backup sh@@s. The entryway can be a bit challenging to new feet. Everyone should bring tick protection and water. The trail is typical of New England. Grass, dirt, mud, rocks, and roots. There's some gravel. A few months ago, brush, branches, and trees were shredded along the underground gas pipeline; the area looks devastated; but it did leave an interesting surface for barefoot hiking.
