Good housemates sought to join Prudence Crandall House, an 11-room single-family craftsman-style cooperative house, currently owned by EBCOHO Supporting Member Spring Friedlander in North Oakland, near Telegraph Avenue, right by the Berkeley border, with several openings. Come to a potluck & discussion this Sunday the 7th (RSVP here on this page) or next Friday evening the 12th (RSVP here instead) to learn more.
Early notice went to EBCOHO Supporting Members, although RSVPs are open to all; if the events fill up, Supporting Members will get priority on the waitlist. If you want to be among the first to hear about opportunities like this, upgrade your membership and get a featured profile, discounts on events, a cohousing book, and individual cohousing coaching/introductions.
(EBCOHO organizers' note: this is not cohousing, although the founder has visions of retrofit ecovillage creation in the larger neighborhood. This is what we are coming to call cohouseholding (sharing a single home and kitchen and facilities), which requires a greater degree of care and attention to the specific people involved. Since the property owner is a member, regardless of the vision/intention/concept/history with prior members, you have to go in to any such arrangement with eyes wide open and looking at the structural conflict and personal dynamics, and ask yourself what you're willing to live with. The description is provided by the owner, and you have to make your own assessment of whether it will meet your personal needs -- Raines)
Two openings by July 22nd, 2 more rooms around the beginning of September from $750 - $375 / month +utilities in our child-friendly, multi-racial, queer and poly positive, inter-generational omnivore collective home.
Prudence Crandall House is currently a multi-generational, owner-occupied household in a very pedestrian/bicycle friendly neighborhood. Our house enjoys great sunlight in all directions. It has a sizable back yard with a vegetable garden, fruit trees, berry bushes, a bicycle storage shed and cloths line. We share a deeply organized kitchen and pantry, a spacious dining room, full bathrooms on the main floor and upstairs, a washer dryer and a comfy living room.
As a household, we share 2 dinners per week, chores, shopping for shared groceries, a monthly work party, and regular house meetings.
Ideally, you will be socially and emotionally aware with great communication skills, ecologically centered, progressive and politically active, queer positive, arts and/or activist oriented. No cats or dogs due to allergies, but we do have a guinea pig.
We live in a 100 year old craftsman house in excellent condition with lots of "Green" features in Oakland, near Telegraph and Ashby Ave., .7 mile from both the Ashby and Rockridge BART stations, one mile from UC Berkeley, in the San Francisco Bay Area, California USA.
