Amir Dotan on UX and the City, aka "Designing Financial Software"
Large financial institutions are increasingly incorporating user experience professionals into the teams behind state-of-the-art applications such as trading and risk management systems. Such systems, which are often used in a stressful work environment, need to support rapid decision making and present large amounts of diverse data, a topic that will sound familiar to those working in enterprise search. This talk aims to offer a glimpse into the world of UX in London's financial district and will discuss working as a UX professional in the Financial Services industry, the trading floor work environment and its impact on user interfaces, and design guidelines for developing user interfaces for financial software.

Amir Dotan (https://twitter.com/UX_for_Finance) is based in London and works as a User Experience Architect at Lab49; a technology consulting firm that builds advanced solutions for the financial services industry. Prior to joining Lab49, Amir worked as a researcher in the Centre for Human-Computer Interaction Design at City University London. In the past he also taught an undergraduate multimedia degree and developed websites and online games. Amir holds a BA in Multimedia Arts from Middlesex University and an MSc in Human-Centred Systems from City University London.

Upayavira on Faceted Search, the 120 million document story
A case study of a large scale deployment of Apache Solr - processing 2 million new documents each day. We will look what Solr is, how we used it, along with some of the issues we encountered, and how we worked with them.

Upayavira (https://twitter.com/upayavira) is a senior developer and consultant at Sourcesense focused on the delivery of scalable search solutions. He also consults on Open Source compliance and governance and develops deployment methodologies, particularly automating the move from bare metal to fully deployed applications. He is an active member of the Apache Software Foundation assisting with core infrastructure and legal issues and has contributed to many Apache projects.

Gregory Grefenstette on Search-based Applications
Databases protect data, search engines make it easy to find. Search Based Applications combine the best of both worlds to produce agile, usable, and performing business applications. This fusion has been made possible by enriching basic search engine technology with greater semantic power. Here we present the changes that have made this new range of applications possible, illustrated by case studies involving tracking and tracing, employee oversite, and social search. More information on his recently-published book is available at SearchBasedApplications.com (https://www.searchbasedapplications.com/).

Gregory Grefenstette (https://exalead.academia.edu/GregoryGrefenstette) is Chief Science Officer at Exalead. He received his B.S. from Stanford University in 1978, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Pittsburgh in 1993. He has been Principal Scientist at the Xerox Research Centre (1993-2001), with Clairvoyance (2001-3) and at the French applied research centre, the CEA (2001-8).
