March 2014 Meetup Featuring Bloomberg and Elasticsearch

Enterprise Search London is kicking off 2014 with a meetup on March 21 featuring Ramkumar Aiyengar from Bloomberg and Mark Harwood from Elasticsearch. Doors will open at 18:15, and talks will start promptly at 19:00. Bloomberg are very kindly hosting the event in their offices at 39-45 Finsbury Square in Moorgate. Space is limited, so reserve your spot now.

Here are more details about our two speakers:

Ramkumar Aiyengar — Team Leader of R&D News Search at Bloomberg — on Experiences with Search at Bloomberg.
Bloomberg is the market leader for providing data needed by professionals in the financial industry, through their flagship product, often dubbed the 'Bloomberg Terminal'. The biggest strength for Bloomberg is its exabytes of data, ranging from market data to news to communication between traders. This talk goes over some of the challenges we have tackled and are trying to address in an attempt to make accessible any dataset which might interest our customers.

Mark Harwood — software engineer at Elasticsearch Inc. — on What's New in Elasticsearch 1.0.
Mark Harwood will cover new developments in the Elasticsearch code base, including, and will also share more on the future of Elasticsearch's integration with Apache Hadoop, visualisation tool Kibana and ETL with Logstash. Attendees will leave with a solid understand of where Elasticsearch is heading and how these code bases can make their lives easier. New features that Mark will cover include:

• Aggregations - facets on steroids

• Snapshot / Restore - backup and recovery features

• Distributed Percolation - running saved queries on new content for scalable alerting/classification and more

In other news, the Enterprise Search Europe conference is returning to London on April 28-30th. Members of this meetup group can get a 20% discount by using promo code "TATE20" when registering.

As in years past, there will also be a joint social meetup event on the evening of April 29. More details will follow.

The presentations struck a good balance of high level product discussion and tech deep dive into specific aspects of each implementation.

Ramkumar Aiyengar gave a very interesting round up of Bloomberg's use of Solr in their production environment and had some very interesting stories and idea's which have come out of the implementation. Really enjoyed Mark Harwood's round up of the new tech in ES. Will be putting some of his ideas and concepts to work here at Euromoney! Great meeting you guys, see you at the next meetup!
