Apache Cassandra is the "NoSQL" database Open Sourced by Facebook in 2008 and now maintained by Apache committers. As such, it has some very interesting features - but spatial support wasn't one of them.
Since spatial data is multidimensional it requires special care. SimpleGeo had to build its own indexing scheme for Apache Cassandra to handle its data. In this presentation, Mike Malone, an infrastructure engineer at SimpleGeo, explains how and why the company did it.
About Mike:
Mike Malone is an infrastructure engineer at SimpleGeo where he works on building and integrating scalable systems that power the company's location platform. Since joining SimpleGeo, Mike has been working to ensure operational continuity in the face of rapid growth and traffic bursts. He is the lead engineer for SimpleGeo's storage product: a spatial database that supports complex ad-hoc queries by overlaying concurrent data structures on a distributed hash table.
