Los Angeles Hiking Group

This day-after-Thanksgiving walk is a tough trek, covering 16 stairways, 15 up (including Avalon, Baxter, Cove and 5 others of over 100 steps) and 1 down in the hilly Elysian Heights neighborhood of Echo Park. We will also go up and down lots of steep streets, including Baxter and Fargo Streets, among the steepest streets in the country. At the end, we will walk past the famous folk art of Randyland.

• Speed: Steady, about 2.5 miles per hour
• Distance: 7 miles
• Elevation gain: ~2000 feet
• Duration: 3-3.5 hours
• Bathrooms: We will take a break at the Lady Byrd Cafe about 1/3 of the way through the walk. There should be construction port-a-potties along the way as well.
  Parking: free parking on the streets near the starting point
• Rain: postpones the hike

Liability: The organizer is an unpaid and untrained volunteer and is not liable for any loss, damage, or injuries sustained by participants and their guests. By joining this event, each member and their guest accepts full responsibility for knowing their abilities and limitations and releases the host/organizer from any and all injuries, health issues, material losses and getting lost. Each member shall make their guests aware of these policies and release the host from all liability.

Meeting location: Gateway Center on Hwy. 39 in Azusa. North of town where the road narrows to 2 lanes. Look for the large turnout on the right side.

Please join the San Gabriel Mountain Trail Builders as we clear brush, repair tread and remove fallen trees on this nice trail near Crystal Lake. Hike will be around 1 mile round trip with about 200' of gain.

We try to accommodate each persons needs regarding tasks and hope that you have a productive and enjoyable experience. We will provide tools but you can bring your own if you prefer.

Long pants, long-sleeved shirt, good boots or hiking shoes are required. Hard hat, gloves and safety glasses can be provided or you may prefer to bring your own. Please be sure to bring plenty of water and your lunch.

Come join the Perfect Weather Hike in Griffith Park every Saturday (location or route varies). Take your time on this go at your own pace social hike.

Trail Is a roughly a 2-hour, 4 mile loop on mostly fire roads, starting at Cadman Trail heading to 5-points, Beacon Hill, the helicopter pad, and either past the Cedar grove and down through the residential neighborhood or return past the Water stop back to 5-points and down. Steady incline approx 700ft elevation gain in the first hour - challenging for beginners but worth it! Go at your own pace. We’ll gather at each split in the trail to make sure all are accounted for. Optional plank challenge at the helipad. Largely downhill from there.

We’ll have views of the Pacific Ocean, Griffith Observatory, downtown LA and Angeles.

Dog friendly 🐕. Just remember there are coyotes in the park.

This is a residential neighborhood.
There is NO restroom on this hike. The nearest is at the Griffith park Southern Railway by the Griffith Park Cafe on Crystal Springs Drive. If you arrive early, It’s a 15 minute roundtrip walk to the restroom.

Hike will be cancelled in the event of rain and soggy trails or severe heat advisories.
