Trail description:

This is one of the most beautiful hikes in the Santa Monica Mountains. Highlights include the spectacular Echo Cliffs where rock climbers ascend shear cliffs, a house sized boulder delicately balanced on a small rock beneath, a giant split rock where kids can dash between the sheer walls, stunning giant sandstone formations, and breathtaking views from the top of Sandstone Peak and Inspiration point. Sandstone Peak with elevation of 3111' is the highest peak in Santa Monica Mountains.

The beauty of the trail is beyond my ability to describe so I will let the pictures below do the work for me.

We are limited by rangers to have a group size of no more than 25. That being said, during the sign up process over 65 people have been on the list at one point. I have tried my best to include as many people as possible.

    • Linda W

Hi Rafael, are you still going on this hike? If so, can we carpool?

      April 8, 2013

    • Anna B.

I'm coming from Santa Clarita and can carpool with anyone along the way down to Malibu. Any takers?

      April 8, 2013

  • Mike C.

This is how we are going to do this hike. If I apply my average attrition rate to the people on the list, we will likely have 25 hikers for the event, below the limit set by the rangers.

Therefore, instead of having 2 groups, we will have just one group, but we will start at 9 am so that we have better chances of getting parking spaces. We need to carpool as much as possible. The ranger lady will be there to greet us at 9 am.

    April 8, 2013

  • Rimona

Mike...I'm not sure I can do it. I might have to work in the morning. I'll let you know on Thursday!

    • Mark S

Hi Larry, I am coming from Venice. Let me know how you plan to drive up (Lincoln through Venice?) and I'll meet you. We could take your car or mine.

      March 31, 2013

  • Linda W

Anybody willing to carpool from Pasadena - Griffith Park area? I'll pitch in for gas!

    March 29, 2013

  • Mike C.

We are limited by the 25 hikers per group limit set by the rangers so I am going to seperate this group into 2 starting times: 9 am and 9:30 am. The slower paced hikers start at 9 am, and faster paced hikers starts at 9:30 am. If we have one experienced hiker who is familiar with the trail as the trail guide, then this plan will work. For your information, my difficult hikes usually have a minimum of 3 seperate starting times.

The role of the trail guide is to provide directional guidance to the lead. Please volunteer if you fit this requirement. Thanks.

    March 26, 2013

    • olivia c.

Hi Mike, is this for real this time? I know the trail very well, as a matter of fact I did the loop today with my kids, we even went to the caves! they didn't want to go inside but we find our way from this side. If I can be of any help? let me know.

      March 28, 2013

  • Nancy F

Since that's the case then doesn't that allow room for some of us on the waiting list? Pleeeeeze????? :)

    March 26, 2013

    • Mike C.

Nancy, One step at a time. I am trying to accommodate more people. Let's find a guide first.

      March 26, 2013

  • Mike C.

I may get a ticket for such a large group. When the ranger shows up, I am going to use my limited Spanish to say that I am a tourist. Just to let you guys know ahead of time.

Anyone interested in carpooling from WLA?

    March 21, 2013

    • Mike C.

For this hike, we must carpool as much as possible. I know the ranger. She watches the parking lot like a hawk.

      March 21, 2013

  • Mike C.

There is a limit of no more than 25 hikers for this particular trail. We are way over that already. As the event approaches, some may run into scheduling conflict so we will have to wait and see if we can add any more people.

For those on the list, you will find this trail to be quite beautiful and fun, more so than many other trails.
