Tuesday Night Trailblaze

Fun Outdoor Workouts!
Número Cinco

Are you looking to add cardio workout during the week? Join us on the Griffith Park trails for a TNT workout! It's an intense workout, fast pace start-to-finish, the group members are motivating, the views are amazing, and being outside feels great! Individually we push the pace as the group typically heads towards Mount Hollywood and at the peak we marvel at the view a few minutes before blazing back to the parking lot.

If you are not familiar with TNT workouts please read all of the details before signing up.

TNT are interval training workouts: it's a high-intensity, fast pace start-to-finish, there are short bursts up hilly sections, the pace is faster on the flat & downhill sections, & the big climbs are individual goals. The group is typically in small clusters during the intervals (climbs, speed sections, etc.) and individually not far apart. There are quick recover points (brief stop or brisk walk) and a break at the top but the group enjoys moving fast start-to-finish.
The organizer/sweep stays between the "Blazers" and the members in the process of improving their endurance. The organizer/sweep will wait at the regroup junctions, No Member Left Behind. However, you must be able to maintain a fast pace start-to-finish

Members that want to try a TNT workout for the first time should attend Week #1.
The last Tuesday of the month should NOT be your first TNT workout.

Monthly Plan: (routes maybe altered or cancelled depending on trail conditions & weather)
Week #1- Dynamite Light!
Considered intro to TNT workouts. Shortest route of the month but trying to keep pace with the Blazers will make you sweat. Averages: 5.5 to 6 miles, gain 1000' to 1300', steady ascend to the peak, & speed work. The Blazers will typically do more miles and gain.
Week #2 - Trail Blazers' Delight
You tried week #1 & it was a great workout, it was the good kind of pain, & the high-intensity pace was hard but it was fun moving fast. Averages: 6 to 7.5 miles, gain 1200' to 1500', 1 to 2 steep climbs, & speed work.
Week #3 - Blaze to Glory
Keeping pace with the Blazers is hard work and you know what it takes but you enjoy it. Tonight is not for first timers. Averages: 6.5 to 7.5 miles, gain 1400' to 1900', 2 to 3 steep climbs, & speed work.
Week #4- Zoom-Zoom-Kaboom
TNT workouts are dynamite and you need plenty of might tonight to keep the group tight. This week we trail blaze more miles in two hours than most do over a weekend. Averages: 7 to 9 miles, gain 1500' to 2300', 3 to 4 steep climbs, & speed work.

Weekly Bonus: climb south face of Mount Hollywood

Difficulty: (ADVANCE) TNT workouts are NOT slow pace hikes and the difficulty level is NOT for beginner hikers. TNT are interval training workouts up/down hilly & steep sections with few breaks. You may use your hands for balance and leverage on steep trails. The workouts are for people that have been hiking/training regularly and want to add interval training to the weekly regimen. An actual tracked workout (miles/gain/time/speed) is listed below.
Tracked: Hollywood Shuffle: 8.5mi / 2100' gain / 1:58 time / 4.3mph

Meet up Time:
6:45 PM and START at 6:55 PM
(sooner if all RSVPs arrive) If your name is on the "I'm Going" list & you cannot make it please change your RSVP to "Not Attending". Thanks in advance.

That was the first time I finished and there were four TNTs sitting on the ground. ...10.3mi & 2100' elevation gain...that'll do it

    Partial group hike,

    http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=2111470

yay, I did my first the slowest hike, still recovering, but 8.3 miles, 2270 feet elevation gain in embarrassingly many hours :)

I couldn't see the group at Vermont canyon drive, went behind Greek to the Observatory, and then to the top, shortened downhill portion in order to come down before the park gets closed :)

Thank you Lou, this hike even motivates sick hikers :)

fyi--trail etiquette to try and follow next time: "although uphill hikers generally have the right of way, large groups should give way to single or pair hikers": per http://hikingdude.com/hiking-etiquette.php

    May 1, 2013

    • Lou

The point before the point you mentioned states, "Hikers going uphill are working hard and should be given the right way over hikers coming downhill. Sometimes uphill hikers will pref stop and let you pass coming down so they can get a short break. The uphill hiker should get to make the call."

Yes, it was Iron Mountain. There was much muttering, but I really liked the view of Baldy on the top.

Thanks, Lou. I just over did it in the last 4 days. Sunday I was with a group that went up to Mount Hollywood. They were an awesome group and very spirited. I posted a photo here. The only weird thing is that you can clearly see two guys on the left arguing about politics. And I'm pretty sure everyone here knows all 10 people in the group.
    CHEERS! AND THANKS!

There is a really steep slippery trail that goes straight down to the lot from 5 points and I re-found it. It goes down next to a huge pipe and then meets some steps. I remember this trail from the "old days" but I have never ever done that with a group. That one will be MY little secret trail, lol....

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
