Just because there’s going to be a party, doesn’t mean we can’t get in a hike beforehand…
The Chumash Trail climbs 900 feet in the first .7 miles to a saddle...
…which overlooks the La Jolla Valley Natural Preserve which is filled with native grasses and hopefully, spring flowers. We’ll hike through the valley, loop around back to the saddle, and then finally down to the trailhead.
Distance: 4.5-mile loop
Time: 2.5 hours to 3 hours depending on the speed of the group.
Dogs: Not allowed – sorry.
Bathrooms: You might want to stop at any of the public beaches if going north on PCH or the Jack in the Box on Los Posas Road on the right after crossing over the 101.
Please bring at least one quart of water and a snack. Wear good trail or hiking shoes as the trail descending down to the parking lot will laugh at anything less gripping. Sunblock is recommended since only about 25% of the trail is in shade.
Also, since this is strawberry season, there are lots of roadside stands selling what Oxnard does best.
Going north on PCH, the trailhead is 16.8 miles past Malibu/Kanan Dume Road. Going north on the 101, get off on Los Posas Rd. and head west to PCH/Highway 1. Go south on PCH for 2.3 miles to the large parking lot on the left. Either way, look for the large orange metal tower which is directly across from the parking lot.
View from the trail.
Definitely has the Wow factor.
