Night Hike....6 PM

Potluck - bring food and drink to share at the top

Level: Intermediate

Time: 3-4 hours

Journey to a discovery location not known to the common people.

An almost fantasy spot that inspires the imagination as if you were in the land of OZ.

Insiders have said that when Big Foot visits southern California, this is his hangout.

We will also have a pot luck dinner, so make sure to bring food and/or drink to share.

Meet at Parking Lot #2 near the Merry Go Round.

DO NOT MEET AT THE RANGER STATION

Here is a map link giving you a visual with Driving Directions from the Rangers Station to Parking Lot #2

Link To Map

Closest GPS Address: Ranger Station, 4730 Crystal Springs Drive Los Angeles, CA 90027

From Ranger Station drive west uphill road toward parking lots & Merry Go Round...there are signs pointing the way.  Drive Through Parking Lot #1 and continue to Parking Lot#2 - the Steps are at the northern of the Lot.

See Yahoo Maps for entrance location:

Thanks, Shannon, Scott, and Lee, for leading this hike. I had a great time and the weather was perfect - cool and breezy. I guess we missed Bigfoot, but after enjoying all the tasty food people brought, I was left with a Big Tummy. :)

For everyone coming out this evening, please try to get there around 5:45 so we can leave on time. For those have never been to GP lot#2 please look at the map and give yourself plenty of time to find it ok. Also, take traffic into consideration. Thanks and see y'all in a few hrs! :-)

  • Naz H.

I'm in! I'll bring taquila, some plates and plastic cups. Can someone suggest something quick, easy and universal I can bring for food?

    June 1, 2013

    • Shannon A.

How about some fruits or veggies (maybe a cold plater)? Pasta salad is quick. People have brought some deli sandwiches that are cut in smaller portions, buffalo wings, maybe a desert of some kind. There's many things as long as your able to carry it in your pack.

      1 · June 1, 2013

  • Rashida likes p.

do we bring our own cups/plateware, or are those provided?

    May 30, 2013

    • Shannon A.

Well, maybe we'll only need a few, since not everyone seems to want bring or eat anything.

      June 1, 2013

    • Scott H.

I have a few as well. We'll be ok

      June 1, 2013

    1 · April 30, 2013

    • Lee Z.

notice the new pic in the description

      May 20, 2013

  • Eric B

Hey Lee. Since you seem to be such a bug fan of Big Foot, I think you should be the one to bring the bacon to the potluck. I'm sure that will allow you to get up front and personal with him.

    May 18, 2013

    • Shannon A.

Actually... he already has. Big foot is just like the deer and the coyote in the park, as far as not minding to share the park with humans as long as you don't bother him. We've crossed paths already though.

      May 18, 2013

    • Lee Z.

Yes....we have seen a Big Footprint

      May 19, 2013

  • Lee Z.

Actually, Big Foot and I go way back...did I ever tell you about the cabin I once had in no. Calif? Ho Ho...up there EVERYBODY talks about Big Foot. I met him up close and personal one evening while standing on the edge of the porch at night....well, enuf said for now. Will have time later to tell the story.

Evening? Now I can't go. Sheesh.

    May 14, 2013

  • Kathy S.

Not since the time was changed.

    May 14, 2013

  • Jack

I have to cancel-- not available that night. Hoping you do it another time during the day.

    May 14, 2013

  • Lee Z.

For those who are backing out because you "want to see", you will be missing out. For this 3 hour plus event, 2 of the hours will still have daylight....and for the hour plus, there is plenty of ambient light in Griffith Park at night...you would be surprised how well you can see AND we take easy fire roads back when it is dark.

    1 · May 14, 2013

  • Shannon A.

We decided to change the time since it's nicer to do this hike in the evening it seems like. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause... we also added a pot luck, so be sure to bring food and/or drink to share. See y'all soon!

    May 13, 2013

    • Edwin L.

Shannon, thank you for the change of time. I agree wit hyou that heat is a factor when walking.

      1 · May 14, 2013

    • Lee Z.

Kathy Sue....you have never seen a sight like LA at night from atop one of the promontories (that's fancy talk for "hill tops")

      1 · May 14, 2013

  • Lee Z.

This will be a lot more fun in the evening.

    1 · May 14, 2013

  • Laurel

Sorry, thought this was a morning hike....

    May 14, 2013

    • Lee Z.

      It was.....'til it got changed

      May 14, 2013

  • Shannon A.

The last time we did this hike there were a lot of nats around the Forbidden hideaway and made it a lil unpleasant for everyone, so we only stayed for a quick pic. Maybe Big foot left some of his breakfast behind... The evening is much more pleasurable and relaxing there. Plus it won't be as hot. :-) Once again, sorry for the inconvenience that this may have caused!

Evening won't work for me cause I have to work, sorry maybe next time, you guys have fun !!!

    1 · May 14, 2013

  • Eric B

Should we bring something tasty to distract Sasquatch so that we can run away, or would it be enough to attach a tasty tidbit to the hiker in front if us when they're not looking?

    May 10, 2013

    • Shannon A.

Lol... I might go with that last suggestion. Lol

Do we take the Fire Road to parking lot #2 ?

    May 7, 2013

    • Lee Z.

I have just made a new map of driving directions from the Ranger Station to Parking Lot #2. Check it out in the Description above.

Doesn't get any clearer than that!

Hello, how many miles is this hike and what's the gain? thanks!

    May 7, 2013

    • Lee Z.

About 5 miles....the route will vary but will not exceed 800 to 1000 feet.

      May 8, 2013

  • Kei

I am really really want to go to Griffith Park. But I am not sure if I can drive there by myself. :<

    May 5, 2013

I'm up for carpool. A ride would be way easier for me than having to take some buses

      May 7, 2013

I'm interested in a carpool too. I'm on the west side.

Is this the Hollywood sign walking trail? Or is it a hidden trail I do not know about?

    May 2, 2013

    • Shannon A.

I'm not sure which trail you are referring to about the Hollywood sign since there are different ways and trails to get there. However, our destination spot to the Forbidden hideaway isn't on or going up to Mt. Lee. You just have to wait till the hike... {=^)

      May 2, 2013

  • Maria S.

I live in Florida where there are no mountains or hiking so definitely looking forward to mountains and adventure. I will be there.
