The Grotto (photoshoot) Hike

  • May 12, 2013 · 8:30 AM

The Grotto in Malibu is considered to be one of the best waterfall hikes in the Santa Monica Mountains. As a free-lance writer, I have been given an assignment to take some pictures for an article that I wrote and decided to open it up and make it a Meet-Up event. I will be taking lots of photographs for this article, so you must be okay to have your picture taken and published.

The hike itself is only 3 miles round trip, but does require some bouldering to get to the actual falls. I have done this hike numerous times and know al the shortcuts.

Directions: Take PCH north from the Santa Monica Freeway app. 28 miles to Yerba Buena Road (Neptunes Net is right on the corner). Turn right and follow teh road app. 5 miles to the Circle X Ranch. There is parking in the front side as well as additional parking in the rear. We will meet in the front and begin our hike here.

What to bring: Daypack, water, a snack, camera, sun block, hat.

Did that trail not just get burned in the Springs Fire?

    May 6, 2013

    • Chris

No, it did not. I talked to the rangers this morning. The Grotto trail opened up yesterday. I will of course monitor the situation and keep everyone informed of the conditions.

Marina, I purposely unchecked teh box to allow members to bring along guests. I ask that your friend join Meet Up in order to attend the hikes. This is out of respect for actual members who may get excluded by non-members.

It may be worth checking with Point Mugu State Park to see if this trail is open after the big fire.

This is a dog friendly trail. Are you open to dogs on our hike? My boys would love it!

    2 · May 6, 2013

    • Chris

I'm sorry Nanette. But I do not allow dogs on my hikes, or children. This is an adult only hike.

    May 6, 2013

We'll be there independently with our pups! Will join another hike when there's a great trail that doesn't allow dogs. :-)

    May 6, 2013

  • Nanette P.

Do we need to have rock climbing experience and a helmet? How advanced do your rock climbing skills need to be?

    1 · May 6, 2013

    • Chris

No you don't Bethalyn. It is a couple of boulders we have to climb over. I will help everyone get through it safely.
