Downtown Los Angeles Urban Walk

Meet in the Olive Street lobby (NOT the Grand Avenue lobby on the other side of the building) of the Biltmore Hotel, facing Pershing Square, at 8:30 a.m. There are public restrooms in the hotel and at several locations en route.

From the Biltmore we will ascend public stairways to Bunker Hill and utilize aerial pedestrian walkways to exit Downtown toward the west, stopping at Belmont Station (a key junction for the old Red Car tram lines that criss-crossed LA during the first half of the 20th Century) and Hermosa Vista Park, which has grass and trees, instead of the concrete open space favored by the city in Pershing Square. From Hermosa Vista Park we turn north, cross under the Hollywood (101) Freeway via a little used pedestrain underpass, stroll past restored Victorian residences on the best streets of Angelino Heights, and turn east through a jumble of older neighborhoods en route to Chinatown, Olvera Street and Union Station.  Next we return to the center of Downtown via the Cathedral, Grand Park, the Bradbury Building and Grand Central Market, strolling along Hill Street and Broadway, with excursions through one or more parallel alleys, to Les Noces du Figaro, a bistro in the heart of the Downtown historic district.

LAVA has two presentations scheduled on the mezzanine level of Les Noces du Figaro between noon and 1:30 pm featuring (1) photographs of Southern California palm trees and (2) photographs of the Bunker Hill neighborhood before it was demolished for "urban renewal" a half century ago.  Food and beverages are are available in the bistro.  The Pershing Square Metro Station and parking garage are only three blocks away for those who wish to skip part or all of the LAVA presentations.

My best guess for distance is 5 or 6 miles. Plan on about three hours of walking.

There is free on-street parking on Sunday within a couple of blocks of the Biltmore Hotel. Or take the Metro to Pershing Square and walk across the square to the Biltmore. If you choose to take the Metro, and have not ridden recently, be forewarned that you can no longer purchase a $1.50 fare. Instead, you must first purchase a TAP card ($1) and then add at least $1.50 to the card. Give yourself enough time to catch the Metro and make your way to the Biltmore Hotel Olive Street lobby by 8:30 a.m. We will depart promptly with or without you (and the Biltmore is an architectural gem worth admiring while you wait).

Since I limit the number of participants please do not RSVP "Yes" unless you mean it. My mobile number is[masked]-0168.

Once again, Tuck hit it out of the park! I am very familiar with downtown and yet he always manages to turn me on to some hidden cool places I have yet to discover. Great group of friendly hikers too! Thanks Tuck and fellow hikers for a great day!
