Lazy Guy's Hike and Fireworks Viewing from a Peak in Glendale

OK, so some of my fellow hikers and hike leaders like to go to Echo Mountain in Altadena to get way above it all to see the fireworks. Not me....too popular and too much elevation gain; OK, I'm a little lazy. So sue me.

Last year we camped out on a lower mountain in Glendale hoping to see the fireworks in three directions. Unfortunately, the main event at the Rose Bowl was blocked by Flint Peak. So this year, I've put science to work, finding the optimum peak that fits my laziness standards and allow us to see fireworks in 4!!directions

GOOGLE MAP DIRECTIONS TO TRAILHEAD:

http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Culver+City,+CA&daddr=N+34.18330+W+118.21015&hl=en&sll=37.269174,-119.306607&sspn=11.183968,19.753418&geocode=FQIfBwIdzmnx-Cmdc3fbHrrCgDH-WetL0emFMQ%3BFYSYCQIdmkH0-A&mra=ls&t=m&z=12

TO PRINT THIS OUT:

http://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/5/c/1/4/highres_252623572.jpeg

From here, we have an unobstructed view of fireworks shows at the Rose Bowl, La Crescenta elementary, Sunland-Tujunga, CBS Studio Center in Studio City and Downtown L.A. (assuming the fog doesn't roll in and screw everything up...)

So the plan is to meet at 6:00, and walk for about 2 hours. We'll pass Cerro Negro Peak and continue north towards Descanso Gardens, with about 200 feet of elevation gain each way. Then we return to our cars by 8:15, get our chairs and snacks out of our cars and plunk down on top of the peak and watch the fireworks.

Then those that want to join in for shakes at the Inn-n-out Burger at the 2 & 134 freeway intersection are welcome to join in for post-fireworks frivolity around 10 pm

(Directions to Inn-n-Out: From the top of the "mountain", take Camino San Rafael to Emerald Isle Drive. Emerald Isle Drive runs into Chevy Chase. Turn right  and follow Chevy Chase for a few twisty miles and just after it passes under the 2 Freeway, turn left onto Harvey Drive. Go 1/2 mile and on your left is the Inn-n-Out burger. If you go under the 134 Freeway, you have gone too far.

BRING CHAIRS, , SNACKS, DRINKS, MAYBE MOSQUITO REPELLENT, BLANKET, WARM CLOTHES, ETC

It was indeed a fun hike. At least we had some challenge...was worried about the "lazy" part of the hike description. Great time and beautiful fireworks

We'd worried it might be too lazy, so were happy to find it involved at least a little effort. And the vantage point was masterfully chosen.

I met some really nice people on the hike tonight! Lots of dog lovers so Haiku felt welcome. Thank you Rex, it ended up being a good hike ... and then another good hike ... with a great party and show at the end! Weeee!

High Quality Audio of a group of revelers in Glendale led by Rex Frankel.
It starts with people running across the area to see the Rose Bowl fireworks start. You can hear the distant low frequency pops and then the finale.
The visuals were taken from footage I shot last year at CBS Radford.

Not quite as "lazy" of a hike as expected, but still great. It was the perfect peak for awesome views of the city, sunset and fireworks. Great job Rex!

My first hike with this group, and it was right in the neighborhood where I grew up, I had sort of known about these trails but never traversed them, didn't know you could. Had a great time re-exploring my old backyard. Everyone was super nice! And all the fireworks... spectacular!

I was going to the Echo Mt. hike, them realized they didn't want dogs. I can't leave Haiku home on a night like this, the fireworks make him nervous but he's fine when I'm with him. See you there!

I'm sorry about the ride. I looked for you for 15 minutes and called but when I couldn't get a hold of you, I felt I had to get on the road to the meetup. I heard the phone ringing and figured it was you but it had slipped underneath the seat and I was on the freeway.

I showed up only knowing one person and everyone was so friendly. Loved spending the 4th with this great group of people! Special thanks to everyone that shared food with me when I realized I left mine in the car.

Rex, I hope you do this hike again. Have never hiked in that area. I lived in nearby Flintridge for many years. That part of Glendale where you hiked was remote and there were no access points that I knew of then. I would like to see it to discover what is there these days.

    July 5, 2013

  • wendy

Hi...i loved the hike. It was a perfect level (not to hard, not too easy) for this hot 4th of July. On a 5 point difficulty scale, i would give it a 3 maybe 3.5 Glendale was a perfect location for the Rose Bowl fireworks. Thanks again for your leadership Rex. We certainly appreciate it!

    July 4, 2013

Rex, thanks for killing us!...just kidding...this was a not-at-all-lazy-hike but certainly fun and the Rose Bowl fireworks were worth it!

remember: bring a chair, food to share (if you want), water and anti-mosquito wipes (just in case). The trail is wide open and smooth, but a flashlight can't hurt.

    July 4, 2013

  • Judith P.

OK to bring along a bottle of wine to enjoy post fireworks?

    June 26, 2013

  • Alex S.

    Can our dogs come along?

    July 3, 2013

    • Rex Frankel; M.

dogs are not-prohibited here, as long as they are on leash they are oK

      July 4, 2013

  • Rex Frankel; M.

The viewing spot is a wide cleared area on the peak which is about 200 feet above from the parking area and the hike to it totals about 1/4 mile up the hill. The view is partially blocked on the east side by a large power transmission tower, so chair positioning is essential to see all directions. We get there via an easy to climb wide dirt road. Please bring a chair, bug repellent, and (optional) snacks and drinks to share. The only rules according to the City is that the park closes at 10 pm, so I am not aware of any prohibition on alcohol.

      July 4, 2013

  • Courtney

Is this a beginners hike? how steep is the incline?

    July 4, 2013

    • Rex Frankel; M.

not steep, but gradual steady uphill to the fireworks viewing site for 1/4 mile. The 6 to 8pm hike has similar easy elevation gain.

Since I'm new to hiking (though do own a pair of hiking boots), are there loose rocks or rocky terrain on this hike? I know I'm signing up at the last minute, but had some plans change suddenly ...
Looking forward to meeting new people too, if the terrain is easy ( of course the term"lazy" attracted me). Thank you in advance!
