By the way, folks, there is no cell service up in the Angeles Forest. Also, if you need to buy an adventure pass, the can be bought at the Clear Creek visitor center which is on Hwy 2 just before the Switzer Falls picnic area, and the passes can also be bought at Newcomb's Ranch restaurant and biker bar.

    September 13, 2013

    • Russ

I have an extra year pass that was purchased in August 2013 and is good until August 2014 if someone wants to buy it off me for $20 (Normal price is $30). Just find me at Newcomb's Ranch.

      September 13, 2013

Sorry Russ. You know what I'm talking about...

Anybody want to carpool from the Burbank area? We could also meet at the bottom of the hill just north of the 210 exit and carpool from there.

Hi Cory, I'll see you tomorrow morning. Sounds like Willie might be meeting at the other spot. Hi Grace, see you too.

Starting a carpool from South Bay. Anyone in Long beach, Southbay, Airport, Santa Monica etc wanna carpool?

    1 · September 11, 2013

A change of plans. This hike is nearly 2 hours away for a 6 mile hike. SMHC just posted a hike in Palos Verdes near my home. My apologies.

I am offering carpool from Golden Mile Bowling parking in Alhambra area. I have a yearly parking pass.

    • Craig

i guess you did not get my mu message. i'd prefer to meet you at 210/Milmada Dr at 9:15. thanks craig[masked]

      September 13, 2013

    • Craig

Once you exit on the 210, drive north for just a few hundred feet and turn right on Milmada and then an immediate left onto the frontage road. This is a common carpool spot for a lot of hikers.

      September 13, 2013

  • Carolyn

    Rex, can we carpool?

    August 7, 2013

    • Rex Frankel; M.

yes--the three of us are riding together. If you have questions, call me at[masked]

      September 13, 2013

    • Carolyn

Nope, I'll be ready as planned and will watch for you guys after 8:30. I e-mailed you with my address and phone numbers. Gracias!

Hi Rex - What's the drive time from West L.A.? I ask because of the notes I've seen below about one hour drive time just for the angeles crest highway. THNKS!

    September 13, 2013

    • Rex Frankel; M.

I am leaving Culver City at 8:30 am. Once you get off the 210 freeway at the Angeles Crest Highway, it typically takes an hour to get to Newcomb's Ranch. We will wait at Newcomb's ranch until 10:30, then drive 3 miles north (uphill) to the parking area next to a forest service restroom. From there, we will cross the road and climb the hill gaining about 200 feet in elevation and we will see a series of granite rock formations. As there is no cell service up there, it is important that we get to Newcombs on time.

      September 13, 2013

    • wendy

Rex.. I hope u do this hike again. I wonder how I missed the post? Oh well..

      September 13, 2013

  • Rick N.

If I read one of these posts correctly, we should expect the drive to Newcomb's to take 45 min - an hour from the bottom of Angeles Crest Highway. Can that be right?

    September 13, 2013

    • Rex Frankel; M.

expect the drive from the 210 to Newcomb's to take an hour. Sometimes there are bicyclists on the road that slow things down a little.

      September 13, 2013

  • Kim C

Hey Rex -- Just as a reminder I will be joining in at the 2 pm hike time. I should be there by 1:30 to be sure to catch you guys at the Buckhorn area trail head.
