THE THIRD IN OUR SERIES OF HIKES EXPLORING THE LITTLE KNOWN JEWELS IN L.A.'S RIM-OF-THE-VALLEY PARK SYSTEM

WHERE: Elsmere Canyon park

WHAT'S THERE: A loop hike to oak trees, caves, a small waterfall (in winter), 360 degree views of the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys

WHEN: Sunday October 17th from 2 to 6 PM

WHY: to celebrate the public acquisition of the major missing piece in the park and trail system that surrounds L.A.'s San Fernando Valley

TEMPERATURE: weather.com says it will be a perfect 75 degrees!!

HOW TO GET THERE: Take whatever freeway is near you to the 5 freeway where it splits into the 5 and 14 freeways in the north San Fernando Valley. Take the 14 freeway and at the first offramp called "Newhall Avenue" get off and go to the right. There is a big dirt parking lot and a sign saying "Whitney Canyon Park". If you park in the first dirt lot, parking is free, if you go past the gate, you have to pay to park. Don't worry, there are plenty of parking spaces.

DIFFICULTY/ELEVATION GAIN: 4/10...the hike totals 6 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain (from 1500 feet to 2300 feet) at the top of the Newhall Pass.

BRING: 2 quarts of water, hiking shoes, hat, sunscreen, munchies
