Red Box to Valley Forge San Gabriel Mountain Hike (6 mi, 1200' gain)

Join us on a short (6 mi, 1200') scenic trail moderately-paced hike descending into the stream-laced canyons of the San Gabriel mountains. Valley Forge campground is located alongside a flowing river with several benches, bathrooms and beautiful green flora. We can eat alongside a stream.
We will pass cabins which were homestead to early pioneers and settlers in the early 1900 great hiking era, where gold was panned. On the way back, we can take a side trail to see a nice cool (secret) waterfall, and take a break alongside the stream.
Please wear long pants, lug-soled boots, and carry two quarts of water for the trip back. This is an upside down hike, which means we will go down first, and then return going upward. There is some poison oak on the trail...so please wear long pants. The switchbacks for the last 1/2 mile might be a little challenging for those working to get back in shape, but not a real problem for others. Please pack a light snack for the midpoint lunch, and include something to share. We might go out to eat afterwards at a local cafe in La Canada.
An Adventure Day Pass ($5) is required..it is available at the Shell station near the carpool point, REI, Sports Chalet, A16, etc. Carpooling is encouraged.
NO DOGS allowed...for safety reasons.
This event will be jointly led with the Sierra Club -20s and 30s Section Meetup.

Meeting Place:
Meet at the La Canada carpool point, on the right side of the road, just north of the bridge, approximately where the Angeles Crest Highway meets Foothill Blvd at 9:15 am.
The trip to the Red Box station is about 14 miles up Angeles Crest.
