A moderately difficult hike of 3 to 4 hours with lots of rock hopping. If you prefer smooth, even trails . . . this is not your hike. Elevation loss and gain (on the return) of 1,000 feet. We will by-pass Switzer Falls and proceed directly to Bear Canyon, described by "Trails of the Angeles" as "near to being wilderness as any place in the front range of the San Gabriel Mountains". True.

Carpooling is encouraged, but if you already are familiar with the area, drive up the Angeles Crest Hwy 10 miles from La Canada and 0.5 mile past the junction of the Angeles Crest and Angeles Forest Highways. Turn right at the sign for Switzer and drive to the bottom of a steep road to the parking lot adjacent to the picnic area, which also has restrooms. Meet us about 8:20 a.m. at the bridge that joins the parking lot to the picnic area

To carpool, exit from the 210 Fwy at Angeles Crest Hwy about 1 mile east of the 2 Fwy and turn left (toward the mountains). Then turn right from Angeles Crest Hwy onto the second street, Milmada Drive. Make a immediate left from Milmada onto the frontage road, Flanders, that runs parallel to the Angeles Crest Hwy. Park on Flanders or adjacent streets. Plan to arrive between 7:30 and 7:40 a.m. We will organize ourselves into carpools and depart promptly at 7:45, with or without you. The Switzer/Bear Canyon trailhead is 20 minutes away on the scenic Angeles Crest Highway.

The Switzer parking lot gate opens at 8:00 a.m. and can fill quickly. Hence, our 7:45 a.m. departure time.

Drivers will need a National Forest Adventure Pass to park at the trailhead. If you have a pass, but prefer to carpool with someone else, please bring your pass in case your driver does not have one.
