Both LA Hiking and SM Hiking did this hike on November 8. If you missed it in November, be sure to come this time. Or come again! It's an AMAZING hike with great views and plenty of rocks to scramble around on. Weather for Sunday: Sunny and 63.
At 3,111 feet, Sandstone Peak is the tallest point in the Santa Monica Mountains. The summit can be reached via a 6.25-mile loop with 1,075 feet of elevation gain that offers expansive views of the range. We’ll climb around on the rocks at Sandstone Peak and TriPeaks.
We will start from the Mishe Mokwa trailhead WHICH HAS TWO PARKING LOTS AND ROADSIDE PARKING and take Mishe Mokwa trail then loop back to Sandstone Peak via the backbone trail. If we have time and energy, we'll go to TriPeaks too. I calculated the pace and mileage. I think we can still get back by 3:00 with TriPeaks, but we'll decide on the trail.
~ 3.5-4.0 hours. Lots of exposed trail; lots of amazing rock formations.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: moderate
You won’t need hiking shoes, but they are better than running shoes for gripping the rocks and trail going up and down the hills.
What to bring:
Basic first aid (bandaids are a good idea)
Water (2-3 liters) and/or an electrolyte drink
Snacks and/or lunch
Phone/camera
Sunscreen (always!) and hat; layered clothing
We will leave at 11:00 AM and should be back to the parking lot before 3:00 PM.
We'll skip the early dinner this time for those of us who want to boogie over to Lee's hike at Echo Mountain (1.5 hour drive, but looks like a lot of fun. Check it out.
PLEASE CARPOOL!! The park limits parking to 12 cars per group. Besides, carpooling is fun. You might meet people you like and it’s great for the environment.
