Highland Park to Pasadena

Details

An urban hike of 7 to 8 miles from Downtown Highland Park to Downtown Pasadena via obscure neighborhoods, unusual points of interest and multiple public stairways.

Not for beginners.

Wear comfortable walking shoes and sunscreen or a hat. We will be traversing pavement and exposed to the sun most of the way. Bring water and, if you don't like Chinese food, pack a lunch.

Highlights include several of the longest and most scenic public stairways in Los Angeles, Johnson Lake, Castle Green, Abbey San Encino--the distinctive home built nearly a century ago by printer Clyde Browne, grandfather of singer-songwriter Jackson Browne--as well as the ever-popular restroom stops en route at San Pasquale Park and Singer Park.

Meet in front of Antigua Bread one block east of the Highland Park Goldline Metro Station a few minutes before 9:00 a.m. We will depart promptly (i.e., don't be late and, no, I won't hold up the rest of the group if you phone saying you're "only" five minutes away). If you choose to drive instead of taking the Metro, there is a large parking lot behind Antigua Bread, adjacent to the station, and on-street parking. Both are free on Sundays. The Goldline Metro fare is $1.50, each way.

Our hike ends about 4 hours later at Memorial Park in Downtown Pasadena, adjacent to the Goldline Station, from which you can return via the Metro to our starting point.

Or, if you pack a lunch, savor it under the trees in Memorial Park, or, join those of us who dine at Yujean Kang's Chinese Restaurant a block away.

After lunch, there will be an optional excursion to the Pacific Asia Museum and the Pasadena Museum of California Art, about six blocks on foot from Memorial Park. Admission is $9 to the former and $7 to the latter, but the museums advertise a 50% discount on the second entry if you purchase admission to both on the same day.

My mobile number is 323-354-0168.

Since I limit the number of participants please do not RSVP "Yes" unless you mean it.

Joining this hike is entirely voluntary and participants assume all associated risks. It is each hiker's responsibility to ensure that s/he is in sufficient fitness and health to participate, with appropriate provisions and equipment.
