Malibu Creek state park and Paramount Ranch exploration hike

LENGTH: 10 MILES, GIVE OR TAKE, WITH SOME EXPLORATION OF STUFF NOT ON THE MAP

Wear long pants if you don't know how to avoid poison oak, as we'll be in a canyon that probably has it

THE PLAN: Park at the Phantom/Cistern Trailhead along Mulholland Highwway and hike down to the Meadow via the Cistern, then the Lookout, then the Deer Leg, then the Lake Vista trails and view Malibu Lake on the way to Paramount Ranch. These trails are mostly shaded.

We cross Mulholland and go north to the Old West Village at Paramount Ranch (an old movie studio ranch) and then up Coyote Canyon trail gaining 550 feet in elevation to the top and loop back on the Paramount ridge trail,

Then we head back to the Malibu Creek State park's Reagan Ranch meadow

HERE WE WILL BE CLOSE TO OUR CARS SO IF ANYONE WANTS TO BAIL ON THE SECOND HALF OF THE HIKE, I WILL NOT BE OFFENDED.

From the meadow, we take the Cage creek trail to Crags Road dropping down by 200 feet and go west to the M*A*S*H film site,  then backtrack and and go to Century lake and finally, go further east on Crags road and drop down to the rock pool for a dip if you want it or some easy rock climbing like we do at Vasquez rocks.

2 pm to sunset, then we grab some grub at some place near the freeway----SUGGESTIONS?? Ladyface Alehouse is good and has a zillion kinds of beer.

There is also an Islands at the same corner.

BRING ALL THE USUAL STUFF, I'M NOT YOUR MOM....

Bring lots of water, hat, comfy shoes, snacks, all your troubles..., guitar, camera, etc

There are so many bits and pieces of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreational Area. I have hiked in the Rec. Area a number of times but never around here.

I'm sorry a few of you got lost. Apparently the Mulholland Highway address I gave is both in Malibu and in Agoura, which I did not know before. However, in the box that says "How to find us", I posted this: GPS: N[masked] W[masked] on Mulholland, 1 1/2 miles west of Las Virgenes/Malibu Canyon road which are correct directions.
I also posted a correct map link both at the top of the page and at the bottom titled "map to the trailhead". Again, sorry, I'm just a volunteer.

I was disappointed as well. The directions were not correct so i just ended up parking at the park. Luckily i had one of my hiking books on hand so i ended up doing the M.A.S.H and the Phantom hike all by myself for about two to three our so. I was so not going to waste a trip out to Malibu Creek :) & that's for certain

Hi all! I DO NOT BAIL. I showed up Saturday all excited, encountered an accident on the 101, which slowed me down quite a bit but, I still got to Malibu State Park past Las Virgenes at 2pm.
I drove south past Mulholland, past the Civic Center entrance, past Lost Hills... I could not find group. By 2:17 I figured the group would have started walking.
I Want to meet and join you! I was there. Thanks Ronnie

Super confusing directions and I couldn't find it. My GPS took me right to the 27800 location but I didn't see anything, and wasn't going to continue driving up a hill if there was no reason to. I'm unfamiliar with the area and was coming by myself. Please include better directions next to and/or better meeting location. So disappointing. Drove an hour for nothing!!

    thank you!

difficulty level is moderate. There is nothing very steep, and elevation gain ranges from 550 feet at Paramount Ranch to 200 feet at Malibu creek. We will be on single track and wider jeep trails. There is also a bail-out spot at the half-way mark, if you only want to do 3 hours.
