How Lowe Can You Go?

A hike that starts at Cobb Estate, touches Echo Mountain, Inspiration Point, and peaks at Mount Lowe. The pace will be moderate and the miles and elevation gain/loss will depend on how Lowe you go! Shout your Echo-echo-echo (2.7 miles up) and then head back down, or continue to Inspiration Point for another 2.7-miles before descending 2-miles to Echo Mountain, and then Cobb Estate (10-miles total). From Inspiration Point it's a 1.5-mile hop to Mount Lowe for a total of 13-miles for the day.

If you plan to hike to Echo Mountain and Inspiration Point only, note that I will not be returning at those points. However, the Sam Merrill Trail from Cobb Estate to Echo Mt. is well traveled during the weekend and the return is rather easy; single trail Out-&-Back. The return back from Inspiration Point is less traveled but Intermediate level hikers will enjoy a nice section of the Castle Canyon Trail on the descend to Echo Mountain.

Note: Priority is given to members that have completed previous hikes with me. If you are interested in doing this hike sign up on the Waiting List. If I don't know you send a message to me and give a brief description of your hiking experience.

The further you hike the level increases.

Thanks Sue for your patience. Yes, that was a hard, but beautiful hike. We took it easy on the way down from inspiration, but we made it home safe. Ready for a night out.

I am recovering from an ankle injury so didn't push myself this time and ended at Echo point. As always I enjoy hiking with Lou, he is very patient and encouraging. I even got to meet Lee Zebold for the very first time and learn about the echo peak history. Looking forward to more hikes with the group.

Will there be other Coyotes out there ???

    November 19, 2012

    • Lou

We may get lucky and see a coyote or deer. And if we're really lucky we'll spot a bear!

I am not sure, but it has been reported that Coyote Joe roams the hills at night

Ok as host in training, I'd like to start the potluck food list...... Which one of you is going to supply the protein, the carbs, and the ever important food group the sugars? I'm assuming you all will have leftovers, right? I prefer my food warm so whose is bringing the microwave? :-)

    November 13, 2012

    • Lou

If I have an apple dipped in carmel there's a 100% chance of no leftover ..

Shoot..... I guess I'll accept leadership without the proper nutrition. Supposedly I am a strong woman so I think I'll make it through ok. If I hit the ground someone have mercy on me and feed me. Maybe Ken will already be on the ground from tripping and I can scour through his back pack for something good to eat. :-)

FYI - I have been a volunteer Ranger for Angeles Forest for many years. The areas Lou is taking you is that land that we maintain....all having to do with the former Mt. Lowe Railway. Sam Merrill was a Sierra Club member and years ago helped maintain the area....he died fighting a Forest Fire up there many years ago, and hence the tail is named after him.

Thanks for sharing! The hiking community is fortunate to have people that care dearly about the forest.
