Sandstone Peak

Since Ferris and Thelma plan to party this New Year's Eve, the annual hike to Sandstone Peak, highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains, has been deferred to Sunday, Jan. 6.

We will hike the 6-mile loop trail with an elevation gain of 1,400 feet and panoramic views from Ventura to Los Angeles.  Most of the trail is exposed to the sun. Bring a hat or sunscreen as well as water and pack a lunch.

NOT FOR BEGINNERS.

Rain cancels.

Meet at the Circle X Ranch Office 1 mile west of the trailhead parking lot between 9:45 and 9:55 am. Look for a white Volvo sedan. The Circle X Ranch Office has the only public restroom in the area and is easier to find than the gravel parking lot at the trailhead. Or you can meet at the trailhead parking lot at 10 am. (Be sure you find the parking lot closest to the Circle X and the ocean, not the parking lot 1/2 mile farther east.)

From Los Angeles: Take PCH north about 20 miles past Malibu and 2 miles past Leo Carrillo Beach Park to Yerba Buena Road, just beyond Neptune's Net roadhouse. Follow Yerba Buena about 6 1/2 miles up into the mountains to the Circle X Ranch Office, clearly visible on the right side of the road.

Carpooling is encouraged for those who are not familiar with the long, winding roads that lead to the Circle X Ranch and the trailhead. Everytime I lead this hike, at least one newbie gets lost on the drive and misses the hike.

Carpool from Santa Monica: Hikers who want to carpool from West LA should meet at 9 am on the south side of Temescal Canyon Road about 100 yards east of the intersection with PCH. Don't be late. It takes nearly an hour to reach the Circle X Ranch Office. Email me if you want to meet there and I will put you in touch with other interested parties.

Carpool from Hollywood: Meet me at Pimai Restaurant on the southeast corner of the intersection of Franklin Ave. and Bronson Canyon Drive, across the street from Gelson's Market at 8:40 am. Don't be late. We will depart at 8:45 with or without you.

From the San Fernando Valley: Take I-101 west to Westlake Village. Exit at Westlake Blvd. and proceed south (into the Santa Monica Mountains) about 5 miles. Turn right onto Muhlholland Highway and proceed west about 3 miles. Turn right onto Little Sycamore Canyon Road and proceed 5 1/2 miles to the Circle X Ranch Office (or 4 1/2 miles to the trailhead parking lot).

My mobile number is[masked], but don't count on being able to reach me in the mountains.

Since I limit the number of participants please do not RSVP "Yes" unless you mean it.

Joining this hike is entirely voluntary and participants assume all associated risks. It is each hiker's responsibility to ensure that s/he is in sufficient fitness and health to participate, with appropriate provisions and equipment. This turned out to be a beautiful day, although the rain had threatened. The high point, literally and figuratively was the view from the top of Sandstone Peak, actually Mt. Allen and actually made of volcanic rock not Sandstone.

One of these days I'll make it on time.

I'll meet anyone wanting to car pool to the parking lot from PCH at Neptune's Net (by the road) at 9:30. I have room for 3, maybe 4 if someone does not mind scrunching for the last few minutes of the drive. Will stop at Circle X for bathroom.

The weather report from 4:30 pm Saturday indicates a possibility 20% possibility of drizzle (less than 0.01 inch) tomorrow morning. Unless the report changes, significantly, for the worse by early tomorrow morning, I will be hiking. You should be prepared for a light drizzle and cool (50 degree) temperatures.

Oh, I see the chance of rain is 60%, with thunder/lightning possible. The bulletin says "rain cancels", but does the forecast of rain cancel?

Anybody interested in carpooling, I could use a ride from Temescal Canyon. (Will be biking/bussing from Culver City to that point.) Thanks.
