DARWIN DAY DINNER with Dr. Scott James "Ethical Theory After Darwin"
What does the Darwinian Revolution mean for traditional philosophical questions about morality? I discuss three general areas of investigation (moral psychological, normative, and metaethical) with specific emphasis on the first: in what way, if any, did the pressures of natural selection favor human beings who possessed a moral sense? And what lines of empirical evidence, if any, support this claim?
Scott M. James is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington, where he joined the faculty in 2007. Dr. James received his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in 2005. In addition to several articles on evolutionary ethics, Dr. James' first book on the subject (An Introduction to Evolutionary Ethics: http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-1405193964,descCd-reviews.html
) was published by Blackwell in December 2010.
JOIN US FOR THE BIG EVENT OF THE YEAR TO CELEBRATE DARWIN'S BIRTHDAY. The hottest area in acedemia today is Evolutionary Psychology. We will see how Darwin's work informs us about morals and ethics and then have a potluck dinner/party to celebrate. We will celebrate the head and the belly.
Please plan to come with your own contribution to an appetizer, finger food type of buffet. We suggest Dinosaur Drummetts; Primordial Soup; Triassic Tacos, a Natural Selection vegetable plate, etc --use your imaginations and have some fun with this one!! Also, if you have fossils, books or other things of special interest related to evolution and Darwin, we will have a display table, so please bring these things along to share.
