At the first JavaScript hack night we'll use raphael.js to produce an interactive map.

All levels of JavaScript expertise are welcome. We'll pair up on this project so you'll have a chance to work with another JS developer.

All you need to bring is a laptop with any fairly up-to-date browser.

Our hosts at the Tribune Companies are providing pizza.

See you there.

Let's try making an interactive map with Raphael.

The data is in a file on meetup.com. Go to the page for our group and choose More/Files from the group menu near the top of the page and download the file called Illinois_data. This data is the Illinois Congressional districts in SVG path format along with information about the incumbents: name, party, and start date in Congress. It was extracted from: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:US_Congressional_districts.svg

Using that data we should be able to produce an interactive map of Illinois that changes color when you mouse over a district and also shows the incumbent's info for the district.

If you're a JS wiz you can start with Raphael information and documentation at http://raphaeljs.com/

If you're not sure where to begin, you can see an example interactive Raphael map in their demos and start by using that as a model http://raphaeljs.com/australia.html
