WHAT TO EXPECT:
This rescue workshop is limited to 15 participants. Assisted and self rescues will be demonstrated and everyone will have a chance to be rescued and to rescue someone with supervision by an ACA trained Coastal Kayak Instructor and a qualified Assistant. Be prepared to get wet. Beginners welcome. All are encouraged to try a wet exit.

There are no rentals available and no gear is provided. Each person must have their own kayak, paddle and Coast Guard approved PFD (personal flotation device aka life jacket) which must be worn and fastened during this workshop. If you have a paddle float and pump please bring it with you, skirts recommended but not mandatory.

TYPE OF KAYAKS:
Kayaks must be 12' or longer, with a bulkhead and/or flotation bags. Deck lines and bungee cords should be in good repair. Surf skis are also welcome. No SOT's (sit on tops), canoes, inflatables, rafts or paddle boards. No pets allowed. If you are unsure if your boat qualifies please call me.

If time allows after rescues and a lunch break, we can go over paddle skills to help you refine your paddling technique to move your boat smarter not harder.

FEES:
There are no fees for this Rescue workshop the ACA instructors and assistants are volunteers. However, there is a $15 ACA (American Canoe Association) insurance and registration charge. Please bring $15 in cash with you. You MUST call me to pre-register (845) 548-2198.

Please arrive early to unload, park your car and finish up the paperwork. From 10 until 10:25 am we will complete all paperwork. At 10:30 we will enter the water, if you are late you will hold everyone up & may not be able to participate. Please arrive early, only you know how long it takes you to unload your boat and gear, get dressed and park your car. Waivers, insurance forms must be completed and $15 collected prior to getting in the water. Please have exact change. If you are an active ACA member there is no $10 insurance charge for you only the $5 registration fee and you must have your validated ACA card with the # with you.

DEADLINE: This workshop is full

On the day of the workshop you will have to fill out an ACA insurance form, ACA waiver as well as a Kayaking the Liquid Skies Meetup waiver. There is no charge to be a member of Kayaking the Liquid Skies and you are welcome to come on our outings.

Bring a cart or wheels if you have them to transport your kayak to the water. We will help you carry your boat from your car if you need. We ask that everyone who is able carry their boat and 1 other - teamwork makes for easier loading & unloading. 2 people should carry 1 kayak at at time.

ADK members have priority since they requested this session. I must pre-register you with the ACA for the insurance so if you can't attend please cancel your acceptance by txt or call me so someone else can take your spot. This is a $175 value at an outfitter, so please don't be a no show.

WHAT TO WEAR
No cotton clothes, wear nylon, poly and/or wicking type material. No flip flops or backless sandals - shoes/sandals must have a back strap water sneakers and neoprene booties are great. Do not go barefoot, closed toe shoes/sandals are mandatory. Bring a change of clothes, shoes etc. to leave in your car for afterwards and a towel. Pack sunscreen, bug spray, hat, sunglasses with sunglass holder to prevent loss. Bring water, snacks, lunch, meds anything you need for a 1/2 day on the water. If you get cold easily you may want to wear a wet/dry suits or skins. Dress for the water temperature not the air. It is advisable to have a change of clothes in a dry bag in your kayak in case you feel cold. A drytop, windbreaker is also good to have in case of wind.

White Pond doesn't have an address but is located on White Pond Rd, which is accessible from Farmer Mills Rd &/or Rt 52 in Kent, NY. The gps coordinates are (41.499207 N, 73.729247 W) for the parking lot & hand boat launch.

Weather update as of 6/1/23. Air temp for Sunday 59 -61F, Winds NE 8 to ENE 9 kts, water temp approximately 67 F. This event is rain or shine, lightening/thunder cancels, please check back Sunday morning.
