Mother's Day Hike from Temescal to Will Rogers

Let's take a kind, friendly, easy-ish hike Sunday. Weather is predicted to be cloudy, 69 degrees with a 20% chance of rain. When we get to Will Rogers Park, you will have the option to a) watch a polo match; b) take a guided tour of the Will Rogers house; c) hike to Inspiration Point. Bring snacks or lunch if you want to eat there. Please note the start time is 10:30.

WE WILL LEAVE AT 10:30, so plan time for traffic, finding a place to park, finding us, and using the restroom BEFORE 10:30. I will be at the FIRST RESTROOMS near the FIRST PARKING LOT in the park at 10:15.

Since it's Mother's Day, bring your biological mom, your mom of choice, the imaginary mom you wish you had, memories of your mom, your adult children (this is not a hike for young children), or sweet, wonderful you.

Some elevation gain (800' according to hikespeak.com (http://www.hikespeak.com/trails/rivas-canyon-hike-santa-monica-mtns/)). Some covered trail, some exposed. A few steep inclines, but nothing outrageous, and no rocks to scramble over. Total distance 6.5 - 7 miles. If you have a GPS, please bring it to measure distance and elevation gain.

The hike starts at 10:30 sharp. If you miss us at the start, you can text me to find out where we are. 310-908-7205. I will leave markers at the forks in the trail for slower hikers.

A mostly flat trail for about .5 miles

then on to Will Rogers State Park via Rivas Canyon Trail. We'll spend about 45 minutes at Will Rogers, then head back to Temescal on the same trail.

You can buy bottled water at the WR museum for $1 cash.

WHAT TO WEAR/BRING:

Wear running or hiking shoes.

Dress in comfortable clothes.

Bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, snacks, camera, and at least a liter of water, $7.00 cash for parking.

Look for my magenta cap. We’ll meet at the picnic tables behind the first restrooms (stone building near the first parking lot).

I can (again) be talked into hiking the loop to Skull Rock after this hike...just say please. :-)

Parking, etc.

From PCH, drive East on Temescal Canyon Road. Cross Sunset into park entrance. If you get to the stop sign near the second parking lot, be sure to come to a full stop. You will be fined $100 if you roll through it (there is a camera at the stop sign).

Be sure to pay for parking at one of the kiosks.

There’s also usually free parking on Sunset and Temescal Canyon Road. If you park on the street, read the signs...parking tickets are $100!!
