Maximizing the Designer-Developer Relationship

This month, graphic designer Kari K (http://www.karikdesign.com/) will discuss the Designer-Developer relationship.

"I'm interviewing several key people with backgrounds in development or design, as well as drawing from my own experience. I'm looking specifically at the practical steps we, as designers and developers can take to create more effective collaborative arrangements for producing web projects.

There's often room for miscommunication between these roles, especially as the web is always changing and many of us come from different backgrounds. My goal is to find patterns in the ways that companies and individuals have been able to overcome those barriers and look at how we can incorporate those practices into our own workflows.

We start with understanding the big picture of how design and development combine. Then we look at understanding each other's processes, and what we offer in our respective roles. By knowing how our own strengths add to the project, what technical skills are important for us to learn, and how to communicate what we need, we can be in a better position to collaborate more efficiently with each other, and, hopefully, create more dynamic and effective projects as a result."
