The Job Interview
Finding a job has always had its challenges, but the interview can be the most nerve wracking. The talk is to address some common pitfalls that may seem innocent, but could cross a line. You want to be cordial but that can lead to conversation that treads upon protected class and into discrimination law. If you aren’t aware of these subtleties it can put you in an awkward position and distract you from doing well in an interview. You also wonder what the interviewer will ask and what they are looking for when they do pose specific questions, making it hard to determine a ‘good answer’. In my talk I will highlight the purpose of the interview, outline what protected class is, provide examples how probing questions could cross the line be inappropriate for a job interview, help you come across as friendly, yet avoid divulging details that could lead to a negative experience. Interviews are something we do not do very often. To perform well, you have to be comfortable speaking with strangers, understand how you can convey your background, experience and skils while avoiding a path that will lead down a path that makes you feel uneasy. Speaker: Sean Kelley takes great pride in being a geek and nerd. He plays Dungeons & Dragons, and owned a Commodore64. He has worked as an information technology professional, but ultimately found his calling doing technical recruiting - both in corporate human resources as well as the staffing world for the last 10 years. He lives in Madison with his wife, three cats and their dog. -------------------------------------------------------- The Madison, Wisconsin Web Design & Development Meetup is now being sponsored by Robert Half Technology. Robert Half is a full service staffing firm that helps companies find tech candidates on a full-time permanent basis as well as staffing shorter-term projects. In addition to these types of offerings, we also have a full time professional team that we employ here in WI. They are responsible for truly consulting our clients on their needs and next steps and are often brought in to execute their solution. We would love to talk to anyone in the IT field about their career and next steps they are looking to take. If anything consider us a resource to count on for resume review, local industry knowledge and potential employment opportunities. Both of these recruiters, George Pappamichiel ([masked]) and Mike Zellner ([masked]), are local Madison staffing professionals ready to aid you in any aspect of your staffing needs. -------------------------------------------------------- If your company is interested in sponsoring our group, please drop us a line at:
