For those of you thinking about app or game development. MS is offering a Rebate for App Store developer registration. $8 for 8 days, oppose to $99. http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/30/microsoft-drops-windows-phone-store-developer-registration-to-8/

Are you getting an error message? I had some trouble with it immediately after installing, but once I rebooted, it worked fine. You do need to have a processor that supports SLAT, as detailed in the system requirements here: http://www.microsoft.... You may also need to enable hardware virtualization in the BIOS.

Since many of us are house bound by the storm, and still have internet & power, do you have any recommendation for links that will start us on Windows 8 development? Details about the best SDK & IDE that we need to download would be helpful. Thank you!

Actually I have access to Microsoft Developer Network, though I have not used it in awhile. I prefer to program in C++, so what would be the best IDE for this? Visual Studio Pro?

      October 29, 2012

    • G. Andrew D.

Steve S, as Val points out, you don't need pro, just Windows 8 and Visual Studio Express for Windows 8. If you're most comfortable in C++, you should check out the DirectX content here: http://msdn.microsoft...

Would love to attend this meetup so I can prove I'm not the only Windows Phone developer out here lol. Unfortunately my SUV broke down and I have no transportation out to McLean. Please post video if possible.

Quick update...we'll be keeping an eye on conditions with Sandy in our area, but assuming that the storm doesn't hang around all week, and power is on at Tyson's Corner mall, we should still be a go for the workshop this Friday. I will plan to send out an email update before the event with any updates.

    Stay safe out there!

I'll never forget how rude the employees at this store were during the "smoked by windows" promotion. I don't recommend attending.

    • G. Andrew D.

Joseph, I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience at the store. Not having been there, I obviously can't speak to the specific behavior of the folks you encountered, but I can tell you that every presentation I give, my goal is to provide useful information, presented professionally and respectfully. I would hope that if you ask the folks who attended last week's workshop, you'd find that most of them agree. I hope you'll reconsider giving the workshops a shot. If you'd like to provide any additional specifics, drop me a note at http://devhammer.net/..., and I will be happy to share your feedback with the store manager. I'm no more interested in customers encountering rudeness at our stores than you are.
