Coders Only - Writing FORTRAN in any Language
We often use the “tools analogy” when talking about programming languages: just as there are many different kinds of hammers and you want to use the right hammer for the job, so there are many different programming languages and you should use the right programming language for the job. Different programming languages help us see the problem in different contexts and allow us to organize our solutions in different ways. But it is not always necessary to use a different programming language to code a solution in a different style. Back in the day we used to disparage others by saying “They wrote FORTRAN in every new language they learned.” But there can be positive aspects to writing a program in a style the language is not suited to support. These include learning new features of your language that do actually support the style, discovering features that you would like to add to your language, and better appreciating trade-offs in languages. In this talk, we will look at a fairly simple application and discuss multiple implementations of it, each in a different programming style. In particular, we will look at a series of Swift programs that analyzes a given text document to calculate the most frequently used words. Each program will illustrate a different style, such as Monolithic (aka Novice Programmer), Object-Oriented, and Aspect-Oriented. Matthew Burke, iOS Engineer at Capital One will be speaking. Agenda: 5:00PM Arrival + Food 5:30PM Talk 6:30PM Wrap up Location: Capital One Towers Crescent 8020 Towers Crescent Drive Second Floor Vienna, VA 22182 Parking: Parking is available in the garage across the street.
