Subject:
At this one day event, participants will have an opportunity to design, develop and demo a complete application. There will also be a beginner opportunity that will help first-time Android developers become familiar with the basics of the Android ecosystem. The event kicks off on Saturday, April 30, 2011, where ideas and teams will come together. Teams will have the rest of the day to build their applications. Teams will then present their work to the public in the evening and winners will be chosen.
Instead of back-to-back presentations followed by several variations of "Hello World," Hackathon is all about coding and completing a full-featured Android application using Android technologies. While there will be opportunities to try new APIs and learn new features, teams will be expected to produce a real, working application in one day in return for free meals and a chance for fame and fortune, should one create the next killer app.
Requirements: Laptop for development. Can be any platform like Windows, Linux or Mac OSX. I will add more references for SDKs and so on in http://www.mobilesdks.com
Award:
First prize : $100 gift card for members
Second prize : $70 gift card for members
Third prize : $50 gift card for members
(We will use all the money collected as event cost to be distributed as Prize Money)
Feeling up to the challenge? Please register by clicking the "Count Me In" button above. Attendance is capped, so register soon -- all registrations are on a first-come, first-serve basis.

I am trying to get more sponsors. I will update the cost later tomorrow.
Anyone driving through or near by Fairfax hospital? I am looking for a ride. Please let me know.
Thanks,
Ravi.
@Jared, i'm excited to learn about something new to me. How about I pay you $20 for an hour of your time to help me setup a functional Andriod dev, build and test process on my laptop, and if there's time left in that hour, maybe you can give me a quick tour of your favorite android app framework and what not. and if there's anyone else around us, maybe they can listen in and enjoy the fruits of our commerce gratis.
well, I guess the first lesson should be how to spell android.
:)
I hear you Sherif, turns out I had a death in the family last night so I may not make it anyway. If I can I will be there. Just a little bummed when I noticed the "Cost" Section (yes apparently I am cheap :-) ). Btw I just noticed they are giving out gift cards as prizes. I am all in for contributing to the pot for prizes though. Note to self: It would probably be good for me to read the entire post before I make comments next time. ;)
You're not "supposed" to be excited Jared. You're either excited about it or you're not. I'm sure we all wish it were free but it's still a heck of a growth opportunity for $20 if you're interesting in Android development.
I'm not supposed to be excited? What exactly are you implying JeffB?
Is anyone planning on driving from somewhere in DC?
If not, I plan to bike from the Vienna metro station if anyone wants to tag along. It's about 7.3 mi. according to Gmaps so it'll be a 35-45 minute ride depending on energy levels (I'm fairly speedy). I'll shoot for arriving there around 8:15am.
I'll be driving from Clarendon. Does anybody want a ride?
The $20 is for the prizes. The NovaJUG is contributing the food and drinks.
Shiva, not sure if this is too late to suggest but I would like to see us using some kind of name tags with colors so we can show and see at a glance what our strengths and interests are. arc90 does this on their web page: http://arc90.com/people
and i've seen it at startupweekends with these http://bit.ly/colornametags![]()
@Sherif, Thanks for the suggestion. We are printing/preparing the color id.
Thanks all, friends. It was a blast yesterday. @Jared and team - Congrats for winning. @everyone - Hope all you felt you learnt more when you walked out of the place. We are planning one more later this year.
Thanks Chida! I couldn't have done it without my team. It was great I can't wait for the next one.
Great event Chida, Shiva (and Gray). Thank you for allowing AOL to be a part of it. Looking forward to future partnerships.
Congrats Jared and team!
Chris
Happy to androidifty machines. I'm sorry that some of the machines happened to be too slow for the emulator to run.
Congratulations to winners! (Winning team members - Please send me mail with your First name, Last Name, Email address and App Name to my email address)
I hope others enjoyed transitioning to Mobile(Android) development. It was a great day for all of us. Teams worked hard in learning and getting the app working.
Special thanks to Han, CM, David, Gray, and Chida.
Thanks to sponsors NIC, Excella, Appian, PayPalx, and AOL(for Beer).
Thanks for all the feedback.
