November's Full Moon Over Alcatraz

                               Novembers Full Moon over Alcatraz

Learn moon photography during the “Golden Hours.” Shoot the moon over the "City" with San Francisco Chronicle retired staff photographer Frederic Larson. Discover some of the tricks of the trade photographing the full moon as it rises during the magic moments of twilight. See how to plot landmarks, read a compass, and choose an angle as the moon rises; measure exposures then scan images; and finally lay out your art for publication. Explore principles of light mastered by professional photographers of National Geographic magazine.

What you will be covering is moon photography. The range of focal length recommended is long to medium telephoto lenses. A tripod is suggested as the class will be doing long explorers in low light situations. The class will incorporate expose times, f/stop settings and certain photographic techniques that are beneficial in nighttime photography. Main areas of emphasis will be capturing peak moment.

Thanks to Frederick for setting this up and for his helpful hints. It was a good evening.

Very challenging conditions with moon so much brighter than the ambient conditions even at the very beginning of its rise. Difficult to get much detail in the moon under the circumstances. But there's always another full moon just weeks away…

Seems like some of us met under the Golden Gate Bridge, and we could see others closer to the Warming Hut down the road. Have not looked at my moon images as yet, but think I got some good shots. Got there around 2:30 PM for a photo shoot and am very pleased with those photos.

Great being under the Golden Gate Bridge with other Photographers. Met some very nice people, had a great time.

It was a great meet up, my shots didn't come out as well I had hoped. Will there be another one of these? Or is it every full moon go over Alcatraz?

Thanks @Frederic! It was very nice seeing you at Fort Point to shoot the moon rise! I have much more to learn from the legend!

We could of used some more daylight but I guess that's something even photographers have no control over.

It was my first shoot and it was great.

No one else are present with Fred Larsen group for moon rise near Warming Hut

      November 17, 2013

    • Judy

George - see earlier discussion. The mistaken MeetUp map says it's near the Warming Hut. That's incorrect. It's down near Fort Point. Go to the end of the road, as though you're going to the Golden Gate Bridge. Instead of going up the road towards the Bridge, go straight ahead (right) to the end. You'll reach Fort Point. That's where they are.

I'm planning on taking Bart and Muni. Does anyone know if the road down to fort point is pedestrian friendly? If not, would anyone be able to pick me up along the way near the warming hut cafe? Thank you!!

My plan is to catch the 80 bus at 7th and market. That will take me to the golden gate toll plaza and I can walk from there.

i will be able to come around 7:00 PM - how long is the group going to stay for shooting?

I was shooting last night (practice) and by 6:30 all the interesting light vanished...

    • Blanka

Hi Emily, thank you. Good thing is that there is a full moon every month. It doesn't really make sense coming so late.

Fred: I have a Nikon[masked] zoom lens (= 300). Will that work for this workshop? Also, I don't have a remote for my camera (nikon d200); do we need that? Thanks!

    November 11, 2013

    • emily

We can give it a try. Worst case you can use a timer. Look forward to meeting you in person.

      November 15, 2013

    • Frederic L.

Bring long lens[masked] even 400 if you have it

When I click on "directions," it shows the area across from the Warming Hut. Isn't Fort Point all the way out at the end, near the old fort?

    1 · November 13, 2013

    • Yelena B.

That's what the organizer's note says, therefore I think the meetup place is somewhere around Fort Point.

"Please park at Fort Point (under the GG Bridge) parking lot walk to where you see 40 photographers setting up tripods."

      November 16, 2013

    • Frederic L.

Under the GGBridge is where we are meeting, please park there and look for tripods.

      November 17, 2013

  • Frederic L.

The Warming Hut is just a short walk towards the GGBridge where we will be setting up

    November 17, 2013

  • Shirley S.

According to an app I have on my phone, the moon is supposed to rise around 5:18.

Does anybody traveling from East Bay to this meetup? I am interested in carpooling as passenger. Thanks.

This is one of my most favorite places on the planet and time of day or year.
