NoVA UX July Meetup: Designing Effective Web Application User Experiences

Tim Mannino, lead developer for Kettul Design, will talk about effective UX strategies for designing web applications. Here's a quick description of his talk:

Do or Do Not. There is No Try. Successes and Failures of UI/UX in Web Apps.

There's a lot of talk these about app development, responsive design, UI/UX, etc. Arguably, it seems the days of talk about "native apps" are quickly moving behind us. The focus on robust web apps that work both seamlessly in a browser but also on a host of mobile devices is more important than ever. Why is it then, that so many web apps out there are just plain lame and borderline dysfunctional? We'll explore examples of great UI/UX in web applications, terrible execution on a large public scale, and pitfalls small businesses and startups can avoid. Some topics that will be discussed:

  • Web apps vs. websites
  • The role of government in pushing (or hindering) change
  • Some of the best web apps out there for pushing the envelope
  • How not to be lazy when developing and planning a web app
  • And more...

I found a lot of handy UX 101 info to write down, and I felt the presenter shared his gut experience on what it takes with the group; it's hard to do good software w/device solutions that are sufficiently cost effective and pleasing to everyone. The government has a lot of smart people and a lot of good consultants are "top fishing" for that work; he needs to watch his gut reaction on that one since many people do find government contracts both interesting and worth the bother.

Thanks Nevin, I agree, there's a lot of great work being done in that sector and it's not always recognized as much as the flashier startups. Good feedback, appreciate it!

I was probably the only Tech Writer/ Web Editor in the room (Content is King!) so I appreciated the thorough introduction to UX, there were tons of parallels. I'm excited to get more experience/skills in UX design.

Hey guys - slideshare is posted > (http://www.slideshare.net/kettultim/designing-effective-ux-in-web-apps) I've included slide notes including some points I didn't get to last night. Thanks for all your feedback! I look forward to editing this talk and contributing to the group in the future. Cheers :)

This was my first NoVA UX meetup group and I had a great time networking with everyone. The presenter did a nice job of explaining how to keep the UX process on task. However, it might have been more beneficial had he explained how to use your UX experience to drive your clients' decision making process towards the proper deliverable (website v. mobile v. native) that would be best for them. In terms of creating clickable/interactive wireframes and comps, I recommend Balsamiq Mockups (http://balsamiq.com/). It puts a playful, low fidelity interface on wireframes and looks a bit more playful so you can agree on functionality first, then use it to create high fidelity comps later. The price is very affordable (~$80) and it exports interactive PDFs so your clients can see as close to a working demo as possible without writing a single line of code. If anyone is curious about this process let me know. Looking forward to the next Meetup!

Another great prototyping/IA tool is Justinmind. I've used Axure, it measures up and is Web-based. Also, if you can code CSS3/HTML5/and a pinch of jQuery, its almost as easy to create working models on the fly with Twitter Bootstrap.

Presenter was good (drifted at times), but the content of the meetup didn't match the title. This was UX 101 and nothing really specific to web applications. Overall I was disappointed.

Totally agree Renee and apologies - I wasn't sure of the level of the group being a NoVAUX first-timer, seeing a lot of other first-timers in the list, and the size of the group prompted me to generalize and water down. Also, please don't fault Jim/NoVAUX - they gave me free reign to speak on what I wanted to. I appreciate your feedback and will definitely update for future talks (this was the 1st time I've given this specific talk). Thanks!
