NoVA UX August Meetup: Strategies for Accessibility

Chris Merkel, Director of User Experience at The American Institute of Architects (AIA), will be giving a talk about strategies for addressing accessibility in the design process.

We're expanding the format of this talk!

While this will still be an interactive presentation, there's been a lot of interest in this topic so we're going to open it up to the whole group. Chris will be taking questions and throwing challenges out to the audience, so come ready to put on your problem-solving hats and dig into creating user experiences that are more readily accessible to everyone.

While waiting for me to condense down some "Where Do I Start?" resources, check out Web Accessibility In Mind's "Creating a POUR Website" set of articles, at http://webaim.org/articles/pour/

And several of you asked me what it's like to use a screen reader (what the blind/visually disabled use to operate a computer, tablet or smartphone). Have a look at a couple of videos, both of which include audio of what JAWS sounds like :
    1) Yahoo demo of blind user in Y! Mail : http://youtu.be/OSNpNzpOCrQ
    2) Blackboard's demo of their software being accessible to the blind : http://goo.gl/yUVG1U
    3) More videos at http://www.uiaccess.com/accessucd/resources_videos.html

    Also, for you Photoshop users:
Check out the video "Head Designed" at http://www.assistiveware.com/user-videos You could get some real empathy for this guy. Pause and think about what it would be like to have an accident and work this way.
