BKROT Home Compost Collection & Youth Employment

From: Sandra N.
Sent on: Wednesday, July 3, 2013 12:18 PM

After successfully completing a one month pilot for a residential compost collection project in Bushwick that would employ local youth ages 16-18, we are now launching a second scaled-up pilot. During the first pilot, 10 households of varying sizes participated and we collected 110 gallons of food scraps!

I am writing to seek your support in making this project a success, whether through donations, networking or help building new composters throughout Bushwick.  All the information about the project is below, but feel free to call me directly at [masked] or visit our new site!  If you like what you read, consider donating to our WePay.

About the Project:

BKROT is a project where youth are paid $15 per hour to collect compostable food waste on Sundays from participating community members.  Bushwick residents pay $10 a month for the service and receive a supply of 10 Liter compost bags.

Our Partners:

We are partnering with Bushwick Eco-Action Network (BEAN), Bushwick Campus Farm, Bushwick City Farms and the Bushwick Abby.  BEAN helped facilitate BKROT's pilot and partnerships.  Bushwick Campus Farms is helping us with hiring youth.  Bushwick City Farms is helping us build more compost bins throughout Bushwick and the Bushwick Abby is our first partner to allow us to build compost bins on their property. We have also just receive the go-ahead from PS 123 to use their compost bins and add more on their site.

Our Goal:

We're aiming to raise $3,600 by July 20th to cover the cost of start-up youth salaries and supplies. Our goal is to sign up 150 community members by August to have 6 youth working! Additionally, we'll be setting up a proper bank account and registering our own internet domain. See our attached proposal and budget.

Website and Donations Page:

We've launched a new website and now have a WePay up and running.  Please consider donating and passing the word along through your networks!

More Compost Bins:

To handle all the anticipated food waste, we'll be seeking partnerships with local schools and organizations to build more compost bins throughout Bushwick.  Our first build is was at the Bushwick Abbey, and we are now getting ready to build bins at PS123 near Maria Hernandez park.
