NYC Permaculture Meetup: April Newsletter

From: Alice U.
Sent on: Saturday, March 29, 2014 11:53 PM
Greetings, everyone.

Happy Spring (rain)!

Our Monthly General Meetup (previously scheduled for April 1) is being postponed to Tuesday, April 15. Our special guest presenter will be RIKO HIRATA, permaculturist, educator and filmmaker who will share a slideshow about 17 years of her permaculture practice in Japan, including farming, building natural homes, and generating energy with biogas, etc. Please join us to welcome Riko, learn from her many years of experience and connect with other permaculture enthusiasts. RSVP HERE.

ORGANIZING OPPORTUNITY / AND CALL FOR PROJECTS-PRESENTATIONS. In lieu of our first Tuesday general meeting - consider joining in to help organize this year's Beneficial Mudball Ball - a Bioremediation Celebration and Teach-In (scheduled for June 1). This Lower East Side tradition brings education, art, celebration and action together - and produces cleaner air, water, and soil as a byproduct. MoS Collective: Masters of Succession is looking for a crack team to help lead this event and connect with eco-art orgs and projects, city initiatives, bioremediation experts, foodies, etc. RSVP HERE for the organizing mtg on April 1.  It will be FUN.

Some activities already in the works (that could use support) include: linking up EM-1 beneficial mudball makers with city and citizen water-monitoring efforts; a grand procession to the East River in ballgowns and other glamorous garb crafted from re-purposed materials (turn waste into resource!) and a boat ride to inoculate the East River with beneficial EM-1 microbes and oyster shells.

  • If you've been wanting to support a permaculture project with your mad amazing organizing skills and work - join us! (MoS has leads and connections and needs help calling, connecting, streamlining and marketing.)
  • If you have a project that produces cleaner air, water, and soil - submit a project for the teach-in!

April is a big month for earth-oriented events and activities in NYC. Check out EcoAnchorNYC which is shaping up to be a go-to site for green events and has an impressive listing of community groups and city-scale resources and initiatives. (Connect to scale-up permaculture in NYC, anyone?)

As a reminder, our NYC Permaculture Meetup Calendar is not a general 'green events' posting calendar, but a way to connect with other permaculture enthusiasts in-person, learn together, or support each other's projects.

The calendar is for:(1) any events or workshops focused on permaculture design skills or the application of permaculture design, (2) permaculture-aligned green events that you are organizing or directly involved in; (3) green events that you definitely plan to attend with the active intention of actually 'meeting' with other permies before, during, or after the event - even if it's to say hello or just sit together. Anyone can Suggest an Event and if you're an organizer (or just like to meet other permies... very frequently...) contact us to become an Event Organizer and post directly. :)

**If you want to pass along an interesting event (but don't plan on going or don't want to 'meet up'), you can post it as a NOTE on the calendar or on our message board in the Events or Calls to Action forums.
