It looks like winter is finally behind us and summer is just around the corner—I hope you’ve all been out enjoying the sun and smelling the flowers! For my own part, I’ve been visiting various garden displays both here and in Canada and one of the best was the new exhibit on Women Gardeners at the New York Botanical Garden. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend it!
In keeping with the spirit of spring blooms and gardening adventures, our Monthly Meeting for June will focus on the next generation of Earth caretakers: our youth. Let’s brainstorm some ideas together about how to get youth, ages 5-18, involved in permaculture.
Possible brainstorming group discussions could address questions such as:
• What can we do to get kids interested in nature, healthy food, and community?
• How do we help kids to understand the permaculture ethics?
• How do we teach practical skills like plant identification, medicine-making, gardening, beekeeping, design, natural building techniques, conflict-resolution, and teamwork?
• How can we make existing programs for kids more sustainable and help them to expand to reach more youth?
Perhaps we could plan some meetups specifically for children and high school students in the future!
The format of this Monthly Meeting will be as follows:
Meet and Greet
Introduction by Permaculture Organizers
Exit the room--More Mingling
Meeting Time: Tuesday, June 3rd, 7pm-9pmMeeting Place: We Work Empire State
(It’s across the street from the Empire State Building, next to the Chase Bank.)Bring something to take notes and small snack or drink to share if you’d like.
**If you are a youth environmental/permaculture educator and you have a program you’d like to present for 5-10 minutes, please let me know by Monday 5pm so I can put you on the list of guest speakers.**
P.S. As this will possibly be my last, or second to last meeting with you all before my move to Pittsburgh in July, I hope to see many familiar faces on Tuesday and really develop some concrete action plans for a sustainable future together!
