Open Data Day Hackathon

Ierašanās no 10:00 rītā.

    I set up wiki page at https://github.com/opendata-latvia/wiki/wiki (will add later also that wiki.opendata.lv will redirect there). I also posted today's notes there. If you would like to able to edit pages then please register on GitHub and sent me (@rsim on GitHub) your username.

    Sounds good re GitHub wiki. A little unusual for me to use GitHub as a wiki, but it should work fine (as long as all of us can change wiki pages).

    As GitHub user I would suggest creation of opendata-latvia group on GitHub and then we could use wiki features there as well as we could use GitHub for publishing source code for scripts that we develop or anything else. Opinions?

    Would be good to have a wiki-space where participants (groups) can record notes.

    Definitely, but that's a long and painful process. What I meant is that activists like us should settle these kind of issues for themselves, to avoid plethora of incompatible standards what is good to no one.

    That would be very nice. But probably the first thing is to achieve that all institutions are publishing data at least in some XML or CSV format and not in unstructured PDFs or HTML pages :)

    If would be beneficial to the open data initiative to start drafting up the data standards how the data should be formatted when published: nomenclature (very important) and the overall file format (XML envelope definition).

    Please submit other ideas and comments as well about open data projects that you would be interested in.

    3) process results of Saeima votings and publish for later processing (see example source document http://titania.saeima.lv/LIVS11/SaeimaLIVS2_DK.nsf/DK?ReadForm&nr=62910966-9628-42c0-92aa-fc00f5f37c80)

    4) investigate and publish summary of government public data usage licences - which are and which are not open for free re-use

    Here are some ideas for projects to work on:

    1) set up data publishing portal (I plan to use http://ckan.org software for that) where to publish extracted data in CSV or XML format from original government web sites;

    2) create some visualizations from statistics bureau data (http://www.csb.gov.lv/dati/statistikas-datubazes-28270.html)

    As unfortunately meetup.com don't support UTF-8 yet I will post comments in English.

    Planned location is eBIT ofice (one of the VEF office buildings, see http://ebit.lv/contacts.html). Later I will post more precise directions how to find it.
