Day trip by minibus to hike from Avebury stone circle past ancient & mysterious monuments.

Walk Description:

This relatively gentle but fascinating 8-mile walk links the most impressive collection of prehistoric remains in Britain. The stone ring at Avebury is believed to be the oldest in the world and West Kennett Long Barrow is perhaps the most outstanding, ancient stone-chambered tomb in England. Intriguing Silbury Hill is the biggest man-made (pre-industrial) mound in Europe while the stretch along the infant River Kennett is a delight for nature lovers!

Cost:

£28 contribution per person for the day trip. There are no trains to Avebury or any of the other ancient monuments we will visit so this is the best way to get there.

Admission free to stone circle. Optional entry to Avebury museum costs £4.90 but is free to English Heritage members.

Food:

Although there is a pub and a cafe at Avebury it would be best to bring your own packed lunch. Also remember to carry plenty of water for the entire day and snacks (dried fruit, chocolate, nuts etc) for short breaks during the walk.

Please note:

It is impossible to state a specific return time as it depends on the traffic, weather conditions, the general pace of the group and other unplanned factors. Those who decide to join the hike should consider themselves committed for the entire day. Thanks.

Equipment (please read!):

Please ensure that you have basic adequate equipment. For this walk you are required to have hiking shoes or boots and a good waterproof jacket.
