Proposed "Jam Sessions"

Greetings fellow PyATL members!

For those of you who don't know me, I'm JR Rickerson, a software developer, and I've been a member of PyATL for about two years now.  I've really enjoyed going to the meetings and listening to a lot of the talks - I know I've learned a lot and even steered my career in a more "pythonic" direction recently.

What I also enjoy is working on a lot of small hobby projects of my own at home.  While I love the talks at PyATL, I tend to be a hands-on kind of guy, and I thought perhaps we could add something to PyATL - "jam sessions".  A jam sessions as I envision it is simply a group of developers getting together in the same location to collaborate on whatever projects they feel like.  Whether they're hobby projects like mine, something you're working on creating for a start-up idea, or your favorite open source project, everything is fair game.  We can just enjoy working on our projects, ask each other for advice, and perhaps those who don't currently have a project might like to find a couple of people already working on one and join in.  There are no "rules," just programming, discussion, and fun!

I am willing to organize what I can of these jam sessions and help get people "into the flow" as much as possible as we start this out.  At each session I will probably stand up for a few minutes, give a brief introduction, and ask someone from each project group to give a quick description of your project so that others who are interested can come talk to you and join in if they like.  I'm going to schedule the sessions to be about 4 hours each so there should be time to really get into some code, and so those people who can't stay as late or get there as early can just join in when they can.  There's no shame in showing up late, so just come join in whenever you arrive.

Since I have a very busy September, and unfortunately will not be available at the next PyATL meetup, I propose we start these jam sessions in October. Currently I'm proposing we have 2 sessions per month.  You don't need to feel obligated to go to both, but I think I can be available for both, so that anyone who can't make one of the sessions might be able to make the second one.  I've found a location for one of the sessions, but I'm open to suggestions for the second session's location.  Several PyATL members who live or work in the Alpharetta and Norcross areas have expressed a desire to have a location closer to them, so I'm thinking something in the Ashford-Dunwoody area would be more central for everyone.  Any suggested location should have enough seating, free wireless internet access, power (I can bring extension cables and power strips), and preferably quick access to snacks and drinks.  Please let me know if you know that area any better than I do and know of a good location for us to meet.  I'll be happy to call them and set everything up if you can just point me in their direction!

Proposed Schedule:

Jam Session #1
Date: 1st Tuesday of the month (Oct 4)
Time: 7pm - 11pm
Location: Tom's Folly Bar and Grill (map)

Jam Session #2
Date: 3rd Tuesday of the month (Oct 18)
Time: 7pm - 11pm (depending on location)
Location:  TBD

If anyone thinks this is a good idea or has any questions or comments, please let me know.
Thanks, and I hope to see you at the first session on Oct 4!

JR Rickerson
