Quantified Self Silicon Valley Meet-Up #5 (IDEO in Palo Alto)

  • September 6, 2012 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Please join us on Sepetmber 6th for another night of self-tracking presentations, sharing lessons learned and the exhibition of QS tools.

We'll be at IDEO this time, so be sure to RSVP early to grab your spot. Talks will be strictly limited to 7.5 minutes + 7.5 minutes for Q&A. Lisa and Karen will be hosting along with Rickson Sun and Dennis Boyle, of IDEO. Lots of fun will be had. :)

Map and directions can be found at: http://bit.ly/oWJ64d

Anyone else who would like to volunteer, please write to us lists4lisa at gmail dot com or ktherzog at gmail dot com. It's a great way to meet people!

Think: "science fair" for adults. If you have a self-tracking project, gadget, app, or idea you'd like to share or demo the workshop hour is perfect for you. You don't need to have a prepared talk, or permission to show something. We will have tables and power strips where you can plug in a laptop if you like, but paper is good too. If you are making something useful for self-trackers – software, hardware, web services, or data standards – please demo it in this workshop portion of the Show&Tell. Please let the organizers know you will be bringing something to Show&Tell so we can be prepared for you.

7 pm – 8:30 pm QS SHOW&TELL TALKS

We reserve the presentation slots for personal self-tracking stories.  Please let us know in your RSVP if you're interested in presenting so we can discuss your topic.  Talks should answer the three prime questions: 1) What did you do? 2) How did you do it? 3) What did you learn?

We recommend using IGNITE PLUS Following in the footsteps of our inspiration, the SF group.

The Ignite Plus format is 30 15-second slides which makes up a presentation of 7.5 minutes. The presentation will be followed by a second 7.5 minutes of Q&A. There's flexibility on slide advancement timing if desired, but the overall time frame of 7.5+7.5 is not flexible. We will have space for 5 presenters.

Click here for more info and here for tips on how to deliver a fantastic quick-fire presentation.

Speaker 1: Jackie Chia-Hsene Lee - Exploring My Fitness Metrics via Biometric Sensors

Speaker 2: Sebastian Ortiz - Evolution of a Wannabe Gymnast

Speaker 3: Jeff Zira - Sleeping Together: A Tale of 2 Larks

Group Mind: At QSSV #4 we experimented with a reprise of the old QS days and invited members to come up and get feedback on their self-tracking experiments.

Each presenter will have 3 minutes to briefly describe what they've been doing and what kind of input they'd like and then we'll have another 4 minutes to generate ideas and see what we can up with to solve the problem.

This is a great opportunity for people new to the QS community to uncover issues and get feedback.  It's also a great opportunity for experienced trackers to understand confounding variables and other tough problems.  If you'd like one of the Group Mind spots, please send an email to [masked] with a brief description of the issue you're facing as soon as possible.

8:30 pm – 9:30 pm MORE SOCIAL TIME

Talk to the speakers, chat with new and old friends, ask other people what they're tracking, and generally hang out and have a great time.

Our host this month of an intimate gathering in two stimulating spaces is IDEO. We extend our deepest gratitude to our annual sponsor, The Bulletproof Executive: source of Upgraded Coffee for supporting QSSV! Thank you to Intel, Autodesk, Basis and Scanadu, annual organizational sponsors supporting the Quantified Self movement expansion across the country and around the world. Five cheers to them for making our gathering possible!

We use the sponsor money and meetup donations to pay for professional video recording and awesome, healthy refreshments, as well as to fund projects that help the larger QS community. If you or your company are interested in sponsoring Quantified Self, please let us know. If you'd like to donate more than requested donation, please do!

Thank you and see you there!

I just saw the email that you may still need volunteers. If that's still true, I can help. Just let me know if I should show up before 6.

Wish I could attend, and volunteer again. I had a great time checking in the attendees last time. But it's just too difficult to go whenever it falls on Wed or Thur. Hope the next one will fall on other day of a week. Have a productive and satisfying time, everyone!

Thanks Dawn. Wish you could come too. Thanks for the note and hopefully other members will realize that doing check-in is a great way to connect with people. :) See you next time; hopefully a Tuesday...

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
