A Photo Excursion Of The Rim Trail.

Come join myself and Brian Baxter for a late afternoon hike and photo excursion of the Rim Trail in Mission Trails Park.

We will be walking north along the trail to setup for photos of the area around sunset.

We will be meeting at 3pm to allow for enough time to hike out to where we will be setting up.

Below is a map of where we will be meeting.

I enjoyed this meetup with SDPC. It was my first time meeting with them and they are a great bunch of photographers. We had a good time and I would do it again.

The weather forecast has not changed all week, so we are looking good for this afternoon/evening. Remember warm clothing and a light. We look forward to seeing you all there!

Any suggestions of what equipment to bring. Tripod?, flash?. I know it's a very general and individual question; I just want to know what are you taking.

    November 16, 2013

    • Mitch F.

I'm taking a camera w/ 50mm, tripod, cable release; other than headlamp as suggested. I've never been to know what's there is too paint w/ flash. I'm hoping the sun opens under clouds to set.

I am taking my tripod and a smaller tripod as well for low shots.

So far it looks like the weather is going to cooperate with us for Sunday, with a slight chance of rainy conditions in the morning, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon. This will hopefully give us some good clouds at sunset for a nice dramatic sky. This also means that it is going to be a lot cooler than it has been the last few days, so expect to bring some warmer clothing for the evening.

Along with your camera gear please remember to bring a headlamp or flashlight. It is going to be dark if you stay out on the trail past 5:30. We will be placing reflective strips out on the trail to help guide you back to the trailhead, which we will remove after everyone is off the trail. There are a few turns we will take to get to our destination and things look a lot different on the trail in the dark, even with a flashlight. :-)

We are less than a week away from our adventure! We will be providing more info about our excursion during these last few days leading up to Sunday.

You may have noticed already that we are not only going to get a sunset in the west, but also the bonus of a full moon rising in the east!

Here are the sunset and moonrise stats:

    Sun
Golden Hour: 4:10 PM to 5:02 PM
    Sets 4:46 PM
Blue Hour: 5:02 PM to 5:12 PM
Nautical Twilight 5:12 PM to 5:42 PM
Astronomical Twilight 5:42 PM to 6:12 PM

    Moon (Full)
    Rise: 5:06 PM
    Sets: 6:21 AM (November 18th)

Most of the trail is scrub brush with some low trees if I remember correctly. It has been a few years since I last went on this trail.

    October 30, 2013

    • Brian J B.

That's right, with some cactus thrown in too. From where we plan to stop, about a mile and a half in, we will have a great view of North and South Fortuna to the east, the fence-lined trail to the north and south, and the sunset in the west (weather and cloud cover permitting, of course).

  • Cynthia S.

Brian, I am not familiar with this particular part of Mission Trails, but is this all scrub brush--or is this just at the beginning of the trail? Thanks for any info. :)

Oh wait...I just realized I got saved by a model I forgot I'm shooting. So I changed my RSVP.
However this shoot does sound like fun.

    I'm REEEEEEEAAAAAALLLLLYYYYY slow.
So I will probably capture the sunrise on Monday the 18th even though I'll start up with you folks.

I just signed up for this hike/photo trip. Sounds great. Could you let us all know how difficult the hike is? I'm also assuming this hike is a free event.

    October 30, 2013

    • Brian J B.

This is free event! No cost for parking or entry into the park.

      October 30, 2013

  • Brian J B.

About the hike... The first part of the hike, maybe a quarter-mile, is fairly steep to get up to "rim level", but it does not last very long. The rest is pretty flat. We are not attempting a cardio workout, so we will go at a comfortable pace. Dogs are allowed! The park just requires them to be on a leash and cleaned up after.

    October 30, 2013

  • Maria

I am also interested in bringing my dog

    October 30, 2013

  • John M.

    Sounds great!

  • Sue S.

    Hi Joseph,

Are dogs allowed on this trail or hike? and how difficult is it?

    Thanks,

    Sue
