- 8 MILE HIKE TO MT PINOS / SAWMILL PEAK / NOMINAL ELEVATION GAIN

- POT LUCK PICNIC / PERSEID METEOR SHOWER!!

( in that order - we'll do the hike... then return to the parking lot for the Pot-Luck... LAST Year we had some INCREDIBLE food happening )

PHOTOS from Last Year: http://www.meetup.com/santamonicahikingclub/photos/3092192/

there will be SEVERAL telescopes in the parking lot set up by a local astronomy club... with NO MOON that evening, an elevation of 8,300 ft, no CITY LIGHTS...

it should be PRIMO STAR-GAZING that evening!!!

RED LED HEADLAMPS STRONGLY URGED!!!

***NO ADVENTURE PASS REQUIRED IN PARKING LOT

IT WILL TAKE approx 2 hours travel time from the west side. I'm gonna take off at 10:30AM so I don't have to stress about being late. the last 45 minutes is a GORGEOUS drive!!!

DIRECTIONS

1. From the west side, Take the 405 Freeway north for about 19.1 miles and merge with the 5 Freeway north.
2. Continue north on the 5 Freeway for about 46.1 miles.
3. Take the Frazier Mountain Park Road exit going west toward Frazier Mountain. Watch carefully for the signs indicating the Frazier Mountain Road exit. (The exit is about 35 miles past Magic Mountain, and about 3 miles past a small town called Gorman.)
4. Continue on road for about 21 miles following the signs to Mt. Pinos. (After about 7 miles along Frazier Mountain road, the name of the road will change to Cuddy Valley road. About 4 miles past this point, the road will reach a fork. To the right is Mil Portrero Hwy, and to the left is Mt. Pinos road. Stay to the left and continue on Mt. Pinos road for another 10 miles and you’ll reach the Mt. Pinos parking lot!
5. The star party will take place in the large open parking lot at the end of the road. Park along the left hand side as you drive in!

(borrowed from the astronomy club) Parking and Headlights:

If you drive up to Mt. Pinos on your own, please try to arrive at the star party site before the sun sets so that we don’t have our headlights on as we drive in. Headlights and other bright lights ruin the night vision of the observers at the site. For this reason it is strongly recommended to use your parking lights and not to turn your headlights on when leaving the site until you are out of the parking area. There may be limited parking at the site, so that is another reason to arrive early and ensure a space. RED LED flashlights strongly encouraged!!!

GOOD CARPOOLING LOCATIONS ARE THE WHOLE FOODS OFF THE 405 AND SEPULVEDA IN SHERMAN OAKS AND THE McDONALDS ON ROXFORD STREET ABOUT A MILE NORTH OF WHERE THE 405 AND THE 5 FREEWAYS INTERSECT.

POTLUCK suggestion:

lets go by BIRTHDAY...
Jan Feb March - Veggies / Salad
Apr May June - Protein
July Aug Sept - Pasta / Carb
Oct Nov Dec - Fruit / Desert

everyone bring your own beverages, plates / glasses / utensils / napkins / CHAIRS OR BLANKETS

***if you have a specialty that doesn't fit into your category feel free to go for it, it's just a suggestion and nobody will check your ID.

    My Evening/Morning on Mt Pinos.

The first clip was started at 8:30 p.m. while the 1/4 moon was setting in the northwest sky and the camera was aimed at the northeast sky. You can see the blueish light of the sky become darker and darker. The second clip is of the northwest sky and was begun at 1:00 a.m. and displays some beautiful astral “texture”.
I will always cherish this incredible evening. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3w_rZzw6rM

My parents and I thoroughly enjoyed the potluck & star gazing! Even the 5 hour round trip from Santa Barbara didn't dampen our enjoyment, stopping off for fresh strawberries just made it sweeter! Special thanks to Nancy for being so attentive and caring to my father!

Ahhhh... Your fathers a charmer and your mother is the sweetest ever! It was so great meeting them! Sorry I didn't get a chance to say bye to your dad before you left. I heard he had asked for me a few times. I was wrapped up in a sleeping bag in Joe's truck bed stargazing and fighting sleep...

Thanks John for organizing another great hike! Mt. Pinos and Sawmill Peak were so refreshing to get away from the city. I had a bit of a hard time with the altitude, but it was great to challenge myself for sure. I continue to meet some great people and puppy dogs too, and strengthen friendships with the hikers I already know. Thanks to everyone for sharing their great food, libations, and knowledge of the stars! I think I now understand "light years away"?! And thanks to Nasir for showing us Saturn!

    August 9, 2013

  • Larry T

    Hello John,
Could you please agree, disagree, comment on below?

    - For the people that may be going up there Friday night, it will probably be almost impossible to pitch a tent after dark because it's gonna be REALLY DARK.
    - In consideration of the Astronomers that will most likely already be there on Friday night, its probably not a good idea to be using anything other than red or green beam flashlights on Friday night (and Saturday night.)

    August 9, 2013

    • George

That being said, just to continue, a lot of astronomers usually avoid coming up to Mt Pinos on this night as they know there will be a huge crowd and a constant flow of vehicles in and out of the lot. And their big scopes also take up a huge amount of space. But there will still be many scopes set up.

      August 9, 2013

    • Larry T

Thanks for the info George. Short of not going up there at all, we should do what we can to be considerate. In a way, we are invading the astronomer's territory since they occupy the parking lot year round. The Forestry Service website even mentions the astronomer's presence at the parking lot.

Hey you guys! I'm so excited! Three quick questions I was hoping for help with?

    1) Could anyone put down stuff to mark a tent space in our group spot for me? I plan on getting there pretty early, but understand it's limited to 12 spaces and first come first serve only?
    2) I understand Adventure passes are needed to camp and they can be picked up at local stores. Does that mean a nearby gas station or something like that would have them?
    3) Re the potluck- is it true there's a fire restriction on and we'll be unable to have a campfire?

    Thanks! -Allison & Eric
