FOSSIL RIDGE SHADED HIKE - DINNER at FROGGIES - OPTIONAL SHENANIGANS AFTERWARDS

  • August 4, 2013 · 12:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

(parking is sometimes an issue... so carpool if possible)

FOSSIL RIDGE follows a small creek and is mostly under a dense growth of TREES!!! ( see pics below) it's approx 8 miles round-trip; up and back (not a loop)

so if you only wanna go a couple miles and turn back, you just retrace your steps and go AT YOUR OWN PACE!!!

( there's a GREAT meditation-rock at the beginning that would be PERFECT to just chill-out for a while if you don't wanna do the entire distance )

ELEVATION GAIN 1,500 FEET; at a RELAXED pace and a break at the top for a snack it should take around 4 - 4 1/2 hours. OH... and there's FOSSILS towards the top.

SORRY.... NO DOGS

Froggies is this COOL / Bohemian tavern / restaurant in Topanga with a GREAT menu, a fireplace, fine wines, GREAT micro-brews and a cozy sunken couch area... OH... and a "Godzilla Fountain"

TO GET THERE: HEAD up PCH from Santa Monica to Topanga Canyon (about 4 1/2 miles from the California Incline or 5 1/2 miles from the PIER) Turn RIGHT onto Topanga Canyon and go approx 4 1/2 miles and make a LEFT on OLD TOPANGA CANYON road. Approx .4 miles (four tenths) from the turn is the parking area on the left. There's LOTS of additional parking along the road if that lot is full.

Great hike, awesome group. The humidity made my skin glow. And sitting on the platform at the top cooked up a nice rump roast. But, after all, what are great hikes for? Thanks John!!

Ah yes! Thanks for a really great hike. A little too much sun/humidity sent me home to spend time with Mr. Epson Salts. No worries, much better today. I will survive :)

Thanks once again, John, for organizing a great afternoon/evening. I sure enjoyed meeting some new faces and seeing some old (er, young) ones.

It was nice to see you, John. Thank you for always getting us together to hike and enjoy nature.....wish I could have made it to Froggy's but my body had other plans.... (seemed to revolt against the /humidity today....)

It appears I'm the only one that doesn't understand the directions. The parking link takes me to Northridge, the Fossil Ridge directions takes me to a lonely road at the top of a trail, no where near the parking. Do we part on the lonely? Do we park in Northridge, if so how do we get to the trail?

    August 4, 2013

    • Ken S.

You know where the inn of the seventh ray is???? The directions could not be clearer!

      August 4, 2013

    • Melinda

I was there for the very first time...Easy peezy ( good directions! )

    The "MAP" url is incorrect.
The correct url: "CLICK HERE FOR THE MAP TO THE PARKING LOT:"
    This is the coordinates:[masked],[masked]
It is on "OLD TOPANGA CANYON Road.

    August 4, 2013

  • Liz K.

Ray, The map I looked at is correct. The hike is right off of Topanga Cyn, on Old Topanga cyn Rd. Old Topanga is right off of th little town next to the Post Office. Read what John wrote at the very top of the post.

Melinda, if 8 miles is too long, I am happy to turn around early with you. Also if anyone else would like to hike for less time, we can do 4ish miles and turn around early as a little group.

    August 3, 2013

    • Melinda

Shane! If the pace is too frantic, I would turn around sooner as well. I want to try at least 6 though, depending on elevation gain. I'm still expanding my horizons.

      August 4, 2013

    • ! That JOHN G.

we don't do "frantic"..... too exhausting...

John, could you give us the calculated risk (in % points) of getting Poison Oak rash after this hike? Assuming we do the entire hike and do not wear long pants.
