HOEGEE'S LOOP TRAIL / REFUEL at LUCKY BALDWIN'S DELIRIUM CAFE

  • Aug 24, 2013 · 11:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

LENGTH: 5 - 7.5 MILES* | ELEVATION GAIN: 1000' - 2100'*

DIFFICULTY: INTERMEDIATE (not suitable for beginners)

*If people are feeling frisky, we'll tack on a side trek to the summit of Mount Zion which adds 2.5 miles r/t and an additional 1100' of elevation gain, for a total hike of 7.5 miles/2100'.

RENDEZVOUS: The lower parking lot at Chantry Flat, near the restrooms.

DESCRIPTION: This loop hike starts at Chantry Flat and heads down the paved road, following the first section of the Gabrielino Trail to Roberts Camp. Then it ascends Lower Winter Creek to Hoegees Campground. Next it climbs steadily up the south slope of Winter Creek, following the Upper Winter Creek Trail. After some climbing, the trail descends back to Chantry Flat.

HIGHLIGHTS: Deep lush wooded canyon, several stream crossings, shade!!!

PARKING: There's limited parking available in the three lots at Chantry Flat.  In the event that you find the lots completely filled, parking is allowed on the road, but each car must be entirely behind the white lane or it will be ticketed by the Forest Service, or towed if it blocks the road.

Adam's Pack Station, which is adjacent to the trail head offers parking for $10, but this lot also fills up quickly.

Another option for carpoolers is to meet and park at REI in Arcadia (5.3 miles from Chantry Flat / trail head) and consolidate to reduce the number of cars.

What I'm essentially getting at here is that parking for this hike may be a bit challenging and require some 'creativity',  so I suggest arriving extra early to allow enough time to sort it all out and get to the fun stuff.

ADVENTURE PASS: Supposedly required to park at Chantry Flat although some of you already know my thoughts on this (i.e., it's really not required here or anywhere--see news link re: 9th Circuit Court ruling below) so...do whatever you're comfortable with in this regard!

http://www.whittierdailynews.com/ci_19974329

ESSENTIALS: Plenty of water, sunscreen, bug repellant

FOOD: Optional refueling afterward at Adam's Pack Station (right near trail head) or at Lucky Baldwin's Delirium Cafe:

21 Kersting Court, Sierra Madre, CA 91024

https://maps.google.com/maps?i=map&q=Lucky+Baldwins+Delirium+Cafe,21+Kersting+Court,Sierra+Madre,CA,US,91024-1929

This British-style pub has a LARGE selection of CRAFT BEERS on tap.

1. From trailhead, Head south on Santa Anita Ave (3.6 miles)

2. Turn right onto E Grandview Ave (1.2 miles)

3. Turn left onto N Baldwin Ave (0.3 miles)

4. Slight right onto Kersting Ct (destination will be on the right)

These directions are absolute sh&! Map took me 19 miles off of trailhead? A saturday wasted.

      August 24, 2013

    • Neil

Frank, I'm sorry you had trouble finding the trailhead. The marker pin on the map link does point to the exact spot (parking lot of Chantry Flat) but understand your confusion about La Canada/Flintridge. This was a default that came up on Meetup when I entered "Chantry Flat" in the address locator and I was unable to change this. Most people came first to REI in Arcadia, but again, sorry we missed you.

      August 23, 2013

    • Neil

There are many good reasons for limiting group size, including safety, logistics, parking capacity, level of difficulty, number of sweeps available to manage the group, etc., etc. Yep, it is indeed on a public trail but this is an organized (key word being "organized") event. Okey doke, nuff said about that. I see you're both new, so welcome.

      1 · August 23, 2013

  • Neil

I strongly recommend meeting at the carpool spot (Aracadia REI). Be there BEFORE 10:45am as that's when we'll head out to the trailhead. 30 or 40 cars won't be able to find parking at Chantry Flat, but if we can consolidate down to 10 cars or less we'll be okay. If you drive there solo it will make the parking situation more difficult for everyone else so let's do our best on this. Feel free to arrange to meet at other carpool spots too, as I've seen some people mention below.

Don't fret if you see a weather forecast for 90+ degrees. 85% of this hike is in the shade in a heavily canopied area following a stream (not including the optional Mt Zion side-trip).

Afterall, what better way to explore nature than trudging around in the outdoors! Looking forward to my first hiking trip with this group... Anyone want to carpool from Culver city area?

Hi - Will there be some fellow hikers definitely meeting at REI Arcadia to consolidate cars, or do we need to make a plan with someone beforehand? I would like to park at REI and catch a lift with someone to the trailhead, if possible.

    August 19, 2013

  • Sabrina

Another park and carpool option would be the Sierra Madre Villa Gold Line station. Free parking in a structure.

    August 17, 2013

    • Tracy

Is anyone organizing a carpool from gold line station?

      August 18, 2013

    Hi Everyone,
Central Coast Hiking Group meetup is backpacking in the same area where you will be hiking... The group will be staying at Spruce
Grove on Fri and Sat night... If you see us please stop to say hi...

    1 · August 18, 2013

My first time joining the group, looking forward to a fun time!

    August 18, 2013

  • Neil

Meet at Arcadia REI no later than 10:45am if you want to park there and carpool rest of way to trailhead.

    August 14, 2013

  • Rimona

What time should we meet at the carpool place??? 10:30 AM??

    August 14, 2013

  • Shine

Hi Neil, carpool at REI, thanks!

    August 13, 2013

  • Rimona

I might not do the whole 7.5 miles (although I'd love to) because I need to be back in Glendale by 4:30pm. So I would love to carpool with someone from Glendale/Pasadena/Eagle Rock, as long as this person doesn't do the whole nine yard!

    August 13, 2013

  • Jessica

When we decide whether or not to go to Mt. Zion, will we be back at the trailhead, or are we on our own to hike back if we choose not to do it?

    August 9, 2013

    • Neil

I'm just going to see what the majority wants to do the day of. Some people prefer shorter hikes and I know others want to hike more than 5 miles if they're driving an hour to get out to the hiking spot. Soooo, however the majority feels (and I'm sure the weather will play a factor in the decision too). It would be fairly easy to hike back or you could follow the map above and finish the loop without the Zion detour (though there's more potential to get lost that way).

      August 9, 2013

  • Irina

IF I will be free that Saturday... MAYBE for now... but never done it before and really interested :)
