They JUST re-opened route 39 to Crystal Lake after being closed due to an avalanche for 9 years... YAY!!!

The first part of the hike goes from the Crystal Lake area to Mt Islip. It's 8 miles R/T and a 2,300 ft elevation gain. We'll be takin' it at an easy pace the whole way.
We'll park next to a snack bar run by a VERY FRIENDLY guy who is MORE than happy to make you anything after the 9 year hiatus.
Water and snacks available... and i figure we'll chow down AFTER the hike and give him some business. TERRIFIC chili, burgers, burritos and a great pasta salad etc etc...

THERE'S A SERIES of waterfalls we'll hike through after grub... several small waterfalls within a 3/4 mile stretch just down the road.

MEET AT THE RANGER STATION AT 10AM AND CARAVAN.
We'll be leaving 10:15 SHARP!!
EACH CAR WILL NEED A $5 ADVENTURE PASS AND CAN BE PURCHASED THERE
RANGER STATION IS ON ROUTE 39 (or San Gabriel Canyon Road) approx 3 miles NORTH of the 210 freeway on the right side.
It's a GORGEOUS 22 mile drive up the mountain from there...
MAKE SURE you've got enough gas!!!
HOW TO FREAKIN' GET THERE!?!?!?!
Take the 10 FWY EAST to the 605 North (approx 30-35 miles from West LA)
Take 605 North to the 210 East (approx 6 miles)
Take the 210 East to the 39 / San Gabriel Ave NORTH (approx 3.3 miles)
Travel NORTH on the 39 / San Gabriel to the Ranger Station (approx 3 miles on the right)
You can buy a $5 adventure pass there / check out the gift store and use REST ROOMS
We'll CARAVAN up the mountain from there at 10:15 SHARP!!!
GIVE YOURSELF AN HOUR AND 10 MINUTES TO DRIVE FROM SANTA MONICA
IF you run a bit late... you may be able to catch up since we'll be stopping at the snack shop for 10-15 minutes at the top of the mountain.
